I don't have locs but I learned a lot from folks with locs that used to post here. I asked a lot of questions because I've been considering locs.
No one had significant hair loss that I can remember. The thinning was camaflauged by the locs. I had a friend, not a wls person, but she was loosing her hair for medical reasons. Locs kept her from going bald. Hers locs were beautiful and the thickness of the locs disguised the heavy thinning of her hair.
