A polite way of telling me my butt is too fat for that dress...lol

Hey Fam,

Now I know that I am going to delay purchasing my dress until I get some of this weight off.  I would like to be back in my 14-16 range BUT if I really buckle down I hope to get in a 12 by September. Not to mention to head off any long term health issues. I know 30 pounds loss will get me into the 16. 50 would get me into a good 12. Of course, I might be a tad off because a Wedding Dress in a 12 is not the same as a Dress Barn 12.

So I was talking to my cousin last night and she gave me a wealth of information about planning my wedding. First and foremost, don't ask for too many opinions because everybody had one. This message is what I needed to hear but I wish I had heard it a tad earlier because I was stressed out to the max last week. A  couple of my family members had an opinion about how they thought the wedding should go. I solved the problem though by quickly informing everyone that they should kindly write a check out in my name...and I would be happy to meet every ones request.  All of a sudden, everyone was

I am not even going to go into the dramatics I put myself through in regards to the bridal party....its all good now though.

So I showed by cousin two dresses that I like....I want to work with Purple and Gold as the color theme. I LOVE purple but don't want it necessarily as the primary color.  Anywho...I directed my cousin to these two dresses on the internet. I prefaced by saying that I will of course lose the weight and think that these particular dresses would look good on me.

My cousin saw the dresses and mentioned that the dresses are gorgeous but that I should really go try on something similar even at my current weight ...before I get fixated on any particular style. She said that I have broad shoulders and that will always be the case no matter how small I get. Well...I never saw myself as having broad shoulders. I thought it was funny because my cousin is as sweet as she can be....but I know this was her nonthreatening way of telling me that:

THERE IS NO WAY IN HEYL I AM GOING TO SQUEEZE MY FAT
ASS IN EITHER OF THOSE DRESSES!!!

I know I am reading her mind...but this is how I interpreted it LOL...Anywho...here are the dresses that I really like so far.

This one in an off white version

I don't know **** about dresses, but those dresses seem to be quite forgiving.  LOL.  I know, I know that sounds like i'm calling you fat too, but i'm NOT i'm just saying that the only tight part on that dress is the upper body so if you ass and hips are big it is cascaded by a nice flowing dress.  LOL.   Let me shut my mouth cause like I said I don't know jack about dresses.  LOL

I think they are both georgeous, but I would want to go and try one on to be sure I liked it on me and not just on those skinny models.

I'm sorry I commented on your thread.  LOL LOL LOL

No need to be sorry at all Lee...that was very helpful. I think the the areas that I have the most problem is my back, stomach and chest. That is where I carry most of my weight and where I gain and lose first. I think its definitely a good idea to try on the dresses now...more so because of my butt. I don't have a lot back there and when I lose its even flatter. I think that the purple dress might make me look like I have a pocket of air back there where as the gold dress looks like it would compliment a flat butt better.

ETA:
I also am very conscientious about my arms. I don't want bat wings flapping every where either. I don't have much flab under my arms now but I am guaranteed to have more when I am done. Might look to something fashionable with a sleeve and a nice neck line.

The gold lace is beautiful.  I'm not feeling the purple train though.  I like the dress but the shade is too much contrast.  It looks more like a party dress for a grand ball than wedding dress.  The spread can make your hiney expand but custom placement of additional lace medalians can counter the effect.

Its been a long while but I think either strapless will flatter you.
The shape of the neckline, bodice, and skirt can play to your assets and there is a lot of strapless out there right now.   You have right sized boobs.  Too many women go spilling out like they have over sized udders.  IMO, strapless looks best as shown here or with a simple decollete.  Just say no to pushed up and squeezed cleavage.

AhhhhhhThanks MSW,

Good feedback. Yes, I agree the lace is simply more elegant. I love that dress and even the scarf.  LOL! I have seen the udders at weddings... I have never worn anything strapless in my life. Not even when I lost weight and was down to 14-16.I guess its time to find out how they will look on me. I am excited to start trying some on...but not before I shed at least 15 lbs.I might take you all on my fittings by posting pics.

I would have put ou at no larger than a 10/12.  I thought we were about the same size when we met.  Probably cause you are taller than I am you look much thinner.

Girl....you just made my day....no way was I about the same size as you. I am one of those people though that would never be a size 6. I am big boned

Lisa the pic of the first gown is exquisite and elegant.  I could totally see you wearing that one.  The silhouette is one complimentary to many body styles.  The satin detail under the breast-line will help to accentuate a smaller waist, and the A-line is perfect to mask any lower body issue.  One other thought too if you have concerns about "bat wings".  That beautiful scarf is dual purpose in that it can be used as a wrap around your arms and shoulders.  It's sheer so you still have the strapless view while masking so much of your arms.  I'm not feeling the latter one at all.  It's not elegant enough for your level of classiness!...

....And remember.........like you said....when you do start to shop for your gown, the size chart thing is not "ethnic body" friendly or right for that matter.  I just shopped for my dress in some of the bridal stores.  I'm generally a size 8, sometimes a 6 in most stores, but I couldn't fit anything smaller than a 12 in the bridal shops....and that was snug fit!  So they are cut strictly from the charts that are designed for model figures with no bust,  tummies or hips.  Don't pay any attention to their size charts or get discouraged by it.  It's just how the bridal industry is structured.

Post some pics when you find some you like...:-)

Thanks so much Janice.....I really appreciate the feedback and I agree and am totally feeling the first dress. When I saw it....it just jumped out at me...there were over 100 dresses on the page and that one spoke to me. I think the purple one was only a notion because of my color theme. I definitely could not see myself wearing an all purple wedding dress (even though I see others that have). You are right...its just not my style.  Glad to here you are making headway with your dress shopping. I will keep every thing you said in mind. and will share pics when the time comes.

The sizes will throw you.  Don't be a head case for the numbers like I am.  I refuse to wear certain numbers.  It varies by place but I have a size limit for everywhere I shop.

Bridal stores generally use the standard size charts.
Garments having the same measurements and sizes are translated accross countries so fit is comparable everywhere.  Very high end manufacturers still use these sizes.  I've been told Euro sizes are also still standard.

A standard size 14 misses has a 28" waist.  Today that's is about a size 4 misses in US sizes.  The term "vanity size" comes from the difference between today's sizes and the standard.

I wanted to post the chart here but damned if I can find it now.  If you sew, most patterns will be nearer standard size.  The measurements on Vogue or Butterick patterns will give you a good idea of the measurements you will find shopping for bridal gowns.
