Hair lost(dreads).
I don't have locs but I luv them soooo much. I've just been afraid to take the plunge. Anyhoo, your question.
A friend with thinning falling hair due to medications reccomended I loc my natural hair when it began thining after wls. My hair is already thin so there is not much to work with from the start. Still, she insisted locs are best in hair fallout situations where growth can be recovered.
Years ago she had rapidly thining hair due to illness and medication. Locing kept her from going bald. I did not know her then but friends in common agree. Her natural hair is thick, very soft, curly, and fine in texture.
What stopped me from locing is fear of commitment. You already know it takes awhile for locs to develop. If you maintain your locs well, the lack of hair styling stress works to your advantage. Keep your protein high and start taking biotin right from the start. Biotin made a huge difference for me in that it slowed the fallout. (When I stopped taking it the fallout began again. )
There is my totally semi informed perspective on hair fall out and locs. One good thing about post op hair loss is it will grow back again. Good nutrition, high protein, never skipping vits, and biotin can minimize loss. There is also a shampoo that is highly reccomended. Hopefully someone will chime in with more information.

LV'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
you should go fot the locs you wll love them locs does take 6 months to start locing but it will be all worth, no hard work once it loc and you get it twisted it can last for month no more perm and all that bad stuff for you hair just up and go and if for oneday you dont feel like doing your hair its ok because you will have locs. thanks for the advice god bless add me as your friend if you like.
Hey my Sister, I don't know much about Locs, dreads or any of the above. I am only 4 months out . I hear what you are saying by not wanting to lose your Locs. But look what you gain in the process..............I'm just sayin. And then in the end, you will have an even more beautiful body and your hair will regrow. I stopped perming my hair last November when I had made the decision to have the surgery. My surgery was in June. I wear wigs for now. And my head looks like Ms Ceily of " The Color Purple" (young Celie) LOL! But I can say the only hair I've seen shed was the hair that still had chemicals on it, I've since cut all the chemically treated hair off. I only have new-growth! (Ms Celie) So I think the chemicals have a lot to do with just how much hair sheds. I might be wrong, but I can only speak of my experience thus far. So don't let your fears get the best of you. You'll get your answers and peace with it! sharon

Peeches, I too have locs and have the same question. Please post back if you find out anything. I will be getting WLS in a few months. Right now I am trying to decide between RNY and the DS. Don't forget to post if you find an answer.
I have locs and I had some hair thinning on the the front and sides of my hair well that is where it was the most noticeable. Make sure you get adequate protein, take your vitamins and use Castor oil on your scalp. You can use any type of Castor oil but I recommend black Jamaican Castor oil that you can purchase on amazon.com. taking Botin can't hurt because hair and nails benefit from the supplement. I don't think there is much difference if someone has locs or not but I do think the hair loss may be less noticeable with locs.
