Loose Skin after surgery - does everyone get it excessively?
I am hoping to have surgery within the year. I am completing the 6-mth Physician monitored diet. My greatest fear right now though is the loose skin. I am convincing myself that it wont be that back...I really am looking for the African-American perspective on this. Any stories or ways to avoid it...I know I have a long time to think about it but just researching everything. Thanks.
There are so many factors involved for each individual (age, genetics, amount of weight to loose), but I've been blessed. I've lost over a 100 lbs & my surgical team is amazed that I don't need surgery. I'm a lil flabby in a few places, but clothing hides that. I prayed specifically & continue to pray that my skin tightens & tones as I lose weight. So far so good.
I have lost a good -165 Now and must say when I was around my -100 mark I didn't really notice the skin but as of course I have gotten older and I am continuing to drop the pounds and have noticed my skin starting to really to hang in places that make me feel uncomfortable. I try not to focus to much on that as I am looking in to a full body lift later next year once I drop another -40 pounds. Focus on your main goal at hand right now and that is to get the weight off and start to build better eat and working out habits and everything else will fall into place. Best of wishes to you on your journey.

I'm a little over 2 yrs out, and 130 lbs lighter. Like some of the others have mentioned, there is so much that goes into factoring how your skin will fare with a substantial weight loss, that it's nearly impossible to give you any reassurance. It's a person to person one on one case. Of course, it's important for you to do what you can to assist, like walking and being physically active to keep yourself in the best possible shape. I'm one of the blessed/fortunate ones that don't require plastics either. In my case I always was active even when heavier, and enjoyed working out and weight training. I think that really played a major role in helping with the elasticity of my skin. Of course, there are places that I would love to suck some fat out of just because I think it's highly visible, but it's not to others. Like my inner thighs, and belly apron, but if that's all I have to worry about....then I'm blessed enough to just not fret over it. Focus on getting to a healthy place for a lifetime. The skin issues are secondary.

Honestly, it depends on your build and how long you've carried the weight. I've had this weight on my for over 15 years. My thighs are the WORST. I've got loose skin already and I'm not even 100lbs down. I already know its going to be a problem and I exercise 4x a week. Sometimes you can work on it, sometimes you cant do much without surgery.
