WOW ... WHAT A WORKOUT.... I LOVE IT!!! ANYONE CAN MAKE A HULA AND HULA IT!!!! I followed the directions shared below from a guy named Jason whose instructions are straightforward... I used my iron instead of a blow dryer to seal the ends ... before sealing I filled it with one cup of water to make the hoops heavier to increase the workout ... I also left some hoops hollow ...
I spent less than $30 on everything and have hoops for days ... my dd's friends all got hoops DD has hoops I have hoops and their is still material for more hoops ... anyone wants a hoop????

WOOT WOOT ... I THOUGHT I COULD NO LONGER HULA LIKE I DID IN MY KIDDIE DAYS BUT I CAN ... I SHOULD HAVE GONE OUTSIDE TO DO THIS BUT DID NOT WANT TO MAKE AN ARSE OF MYSELF .... I LOVE THIS WORKOUT ... IT IS FUN .. FUN... FUNNNNNNNNNN!!!! JUST PUT THE HOOP AROUND YOUR WAIST AND GYRATE THE HIPS ... MAKE SURE TO MEASURE YOUR HOOP FROM FLOOR TO WAIST ...

SHOOT ... I CUT A FEW MORE PIECES AND DID A DOUBLE HULA .... WOOT WOOT!!!!

These are the second sets of hoops I cut.... my DD and her friends went off with the first ones...

WHO WOULD TELL I WOULD BE HULA-ING TODAY? FOUR AND A HALF YEARS AGO II COULD BARELY MAKE IT UP A FLIGHT OF STAIRS???? ohhh I am getting bold now ... going on the beach and hula a bit and dragging DS to take some pics ... How to Make a Hula Hoop

Almost as much fun as hooping itself, making your own hoops allows you to share the joy with others! I've made and given away quite a few of them, but in order to implement my Master Plan (to overwhelm the world with hoopy happiness), we're going to need more people making hoops. It only costs $4-5 to make a hoop, and you can make 'em pretty fast once you get going.

What's this hooping thing all about?
Ariel explains.

The poly tubing usually used for irrigation is ideal for making hula hoops. Most hoopers use either 160 psi 3/4" diameter pipe (my favorite) or 100 psi 1" diameter. If you want a lighter hoop, or are making them for kids, use 100 psi 3/4" tubing. (Note: 160 psi 1" will make a very heavy hoop.) Tubing usually comes in 100 foot coils, and can be found at irrigation supply stores, and at some Home Depot and Lowe's-type retailers. (Prices range from $15-25 per 100' -- enough for 8 hoops)

[Having trouble finding tubing? Hooping.org has
suggestions.]

Other supplies:

  • Ratcheting PVC cutter (the best way to cut tubing - see below)
  • Insert-connectors (1" connectors for 1" tubing ; 3/4" for 3/4" tubing)
  • Colorful tape (electrical tape works well)
  • hairdryer (to soften the tube ends - soaking in ho****er also works)

Choose your hoop size - and cut. (My hoops are usually between 11'6" and 13' in circumference, but instead of measuring you could just make a loop that stands somewhere between navel and shoulder height.) You could use a hacksaw or a sturdy blade, but to make a safe, clean & easy cut, I've invested in a $12 ratcheting PVC cutter. It works beautifully.

The two ends will be connected with an inserted connector. These should be available wherever you buy the tubing. Make sure you get 1" connectors if your tube is 1" in diameter (and 3/4" connectors only if you have 3/4" tube).

At this point, you can add weight or noisemakers into the hoop. For extra weight (a better workout - and perhaps a bruised waist), pour in a cup of water or sand. For noise, pour in 20-30 small beans or corn kernels. (Note that you can't easily get these things out once the hoop is made, and that you might not always want to have a noisy hoop....)

The tubing ends must be heated to make them pliable enough to accept the connector. A few minutes of focused hairdryer heat will do the trick, as will soaking the ends in ho****er. (You can also carefully hold them over a stovetop gas flame, but you really don't want to start melting the stuff.)

Quickly grab a connector, and push the two tube ends together over the connector. If it doesn't go in, you need to heat it up more. The connector should disappear entirely within the tubing. As the tubing cools, it will contract around the connector for a strong seal.

I don't think it's needed, but I usually duct tape the seal.

At this point you could also apply some padding. Matt recommends wrapping copper pipe insulation; I like Rubatex pipe insulation that fits over the hoop..

Now comes the fun part: Decorating!

I tend to make colorful candycane stripes of electrical tape. You could also duct tape the whole thing, or leave it black. A huge selection of tape, from the mundane to the fantastic, can be found at

HULA HOOP EXERCISE AND BENEFITS

Lately there has been a lot of buzz regarding hula hoop exercise. You may be wondering what the big deal with hula hooping exercise is. Well it has become latest and best fitness routine to trim your waist and lose weight.

A hula hoop exercise routine is not only simple, but also takes up very little time. While you might be considering doing other types of exercises to achieve fat loss and rock hard abs they don’t compare to a hula hoop exercise. This hula hoop workout is by far much easier and light on your wallet compared to other fitness equipment.

Using these simple

hula hoop exercise methods you can attain that slim figure you have always wanted. You can forget about doing the traditional sit-ups and other abdominal exercises that can be a big strain on your neck and back area. Such exercises when not done right can lead to injuries and other types of complications that might need medical treatment. Another thing is that such exercise routines are not so easy to do constantly that you waste all your energy within a few rounds.

Now with hula hoop exercise it is totally a new way of achieving results with your exercises. I believe it is by far the most enjoyment you will gain from trying to get rid of the fat. This simple exercise is short in duration unlike hours spent at your fitness clubs or on your home gym equipment.

The best thing about

hula hoop exercise is that you can perform the exercises at various time intervals during the day. Since each session takes only a few minutes it is easy to fit it in during a person’s daily routine. After a few sessions you will begin to notice that your stomach is slowly becoming flat and you see your abdominal muscles taking shape.

Besides hula hoop exercise being easy and so much fun, the hula hoop equipment that you will use is not every expensive compared to those other abdominal exercise equipment you see on television. A good size and weighted hula hoop will only set you back few dollars compared to the hundreds that you might spend on one of those other ab machines. In the end you see the same results with hula hoop exercise without the high cost.

Hula hoop exercise has become trendy for many people that are busy and don’t want to spend too much on exercise equipment. Besides just about all the people I know how to work with a hula hoop. The way you lose weight with hula hoops is not that much different with how it was used during your childhood days.

All that is needed for hula hoop exercise is to put the hula hoop around your stomach area and then move your hips in circular motion. You want to do this for a few minutes so that the hula hoop does fall down. Just by doing this for this length of time you can easily take off a quick 15-20 calories (you can use a calorie counter to monitor your progress). Now all that you need to do is perform hula hoop exercise several times during the day to increase the amount of calories that you want to burn.

Another big advantage to doing these quick hula hoop exercises is that you will increase your body’s metabolic rate. This will burn more of your stored calories and fat. When you have a higher metabolism you are more likely to trim your waist and get that fabulous body in the fastest amount of time. Hula hoop exercise is one workout you should consider next time you begin an exercise program.

Sounds like fun and exercise is icing on the cake! (maybe I should say blueberries on the yogurt :)

I'm organizing a large cook out and I think I'll make a few as an activity.  A guy at the farmers market brings about 20 of them to the market for anyone who want to hula hoop (I now realize he makes them and how).  He uses vibrant colors of tape around them and young & old join in.

Thanks for sharing!
