Hi I am having surgery on July 25th. I am having the sleeve and I have read post from everyone. I just found this forum and I am curious as to how african americans bodies react to the surgery. I have read about a lot of women who have lost hair but I never hear  african american woman say this. Please feel me in on any information. Thanks in advance!

Plenty of all wls types here on BAF.  We have all the same hair loss issues typical to our surgery types.

For many people adding biotin (a water soluable b vitamin) to your supplement routine and uping the protein helps.  If I had it to do over I would have started biotin with my supplements from the start.  I had alot of thinning and clogged drains, but the hair grows back.

I am about 13 months our from surgery. I wish I can comment on hair loss but with all the weaves and changing hair styles every season. I really don't know. When I did use my own hair  - around 7months post op. It looked better than ever. Then I stopped taking care of it and it broke off. so...

Anyway good luck!

I co-sign with MSW.  I had the sleeve done on 9/11/10 and my hair became thin and started to come out.  I increased my protein and started taking Botin and its getting better.

Do not dwell on those things you've not, but gives thanks for the things you've got.

I had VSG surgery on 03/02/2011, and yes, I have been steadily losing hair.  It doesn't bother me though because I love to wear hairpieces.  I've read that it usually happens from the 3-7 month marks.  I take a daily multivitamin, take all my supplements, and it still happens.  I have seriously contemplated shaving my head if I have to....lol.  Hubby is totally ok with that too!

Hey -

I had VSG 6/3/09.  I've been wearing my hair in locs for over 20 years.  I did experience some breskage, but not enough to notice.  I continue to take biotin - not sure if it works, but it's a small concession if it does.
I have gone from 309 to 175, and have not gained any back. I feel great, and to be honest, my hair is the LAST thing I worry about...  clothing and shoes take up more of my time. Cause your FEET even shrink!
Best of luck to you - I wish you well!

I'm a sleever and lost hair starting around 4 months out.  It really thinned out ...I had stopped relaxing my hair to go natural no one noticed but me.  Just keep up with your vitamins and it will thicken back up for most people.
