Addicted To Food on the OWN Channel
This series just started last week and comes on, on Tues. @ 9 pm. It follows 8 people with eating disorders ranging from compulsive eating, binging and purging, anorexic, overeating etc. What is scary is that 2 of these people had gastric bypass and gained most of their weight back and went back to the food. The Rehab center is called Shades of Hope and is located in Texas and is an in-patient center. It makes so much sense because we are addicts and from the posts I've read lately, I know I'm not alone when I say that this surgery didn't cure me. If you don't get OWN, you can watch this series on your computer by going to the website. I wish I could go to the treatment center but it costs at least $20,000 and is covered by some insurances, I haven't checked what insurance. Check it out and I bet you will learn something.
We talked about this on another site I use. I just hope they are respectful of obesity and obesity related issues.
Eating disorders are respected as a disease as long as you're not fat. Once you're talking about being overweight you become fat people as entertainment complete with all the stereotypical lables like gluttonous, lazy, weak willed etc, etc.
It angers me that the same person who would say to a fat person simply eat less and exercise more would never think to say to an anorexic simply eat regular meals; or, to a bulemic simply keep your fingers out of your throat and if you see a little weight gain simply eat less and exercise more.
Then there is the unrealistic view of weight loss surgery these shows always seem to present or at least those I've seen anyway. Their presentation is everyone gains all the weight back and/ or having wls surgery is a sign of weakness. These shows make money through the diet and weight loss industry. The last thing they want to tell the public is that wls is proven the most reliable method of permanant long term weight loss.
I don't have own but I won't be watching, not even on the computer. Years back Hazelton, an addiction and recovery company used to broadcast food addict meetings along with its rotation of other addictive/ compulsive disorders. In typing this I just realized there was not one morbidly obese person on the meetings I've seen.
I'll tune in to this type of programming when I see shows about obese, morbidly obese, and supermorbidly obese people that respectfully examine the disease from multiple angles. Also, I want to see realistic discussion of the solutions that work and those that don't. I especially want to see all aspects of wls presented in light of the medical evidence instead of what the diet industry is selling at the moment.
I'm hopping that with Oprah fighting fat all her life this will be different. If I hear good things perhaps I'll change my mind. I want to be wrong on this one.

LV'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
The lady that runs this program , Tennie believes in the 12 step program. I first saw her on the program Ruby, the woman that has been morbidly obese all her life and trying to lose weight on her reality show . Oprah doesn't participate on the shows on her network, I think she has just given up on the weight. What caught my attention about this program is therapy and spiritual based program. I know that I'm still a food addict and the surgery didn't help with that. The first year after surgery I couldn't eat much and I was so careful about what I ate but now it's like whateva, wheneva, whereeva.... It will be interesting to see how this program will turn out, especially since I had a snack this week while watching.
I believe in the 12 step approach. But, I think where food is concerned, we have to work the steps over and over because there is no avoiding food.
I'm somewhat glad Ophra seems to have focused on health over her weight the last few years. To me its more like aceptance that she's ok for a woman in her 50's and thin may just not be for her. A little overweight but still healthy may at last be ok with her.
I used to want to slap Ophra sometimes. An accomplished professional fat Black woman in a white male news/ entertainment media world yet her public issue is going back and forth with dieting. Its great she's no longer mo headed to smo. Holding at maintenance and doing well. Yet every now and then some health guru comes on and points out if she's gained a few. Again its ok to disrespect fat people.
I'm hoping as a fat woman who keeps creative cotrol over what her name is on she will not sell out to weight loss product sponsors and show whats real not whats 'reality tv'. This network is an opportunity to show the multitude of reasons people are fat. Most fat people do not start out mindlessly eating. Whatever lead to obesity in the first place often turned into a downward spiral as happens to substance abusers and others with the 'skinny' eating disorders.
Now that I know 12 steps is the basis of this show I may check it out online. I'll put my soapbox away now. Everyone knows I just can't be brief, lol.
