Here at the WDBLA newsdesk here on BAF-TV we would be remiss if we didn't call attention to the advances and strides made by African-Americans during Black History month. With that being said I bring you Double_Ayy!'s Black Facts for the first week of February Twenty-eleven... Feb 1st
On this day in Black history in 1998, Rear Admiral Lillian E. Fishburne became the first female African-American to be promoted to rear admiral. Her openly-gay cousin, "Twan," was quite jealous hearing about her good news until she finally explained to him the real responsibilities of her new position, which had nothing to do with what he initially thought they were.
Feb 2nd
On this day in Black history in 1990, F.W. de Klerk allowed the African National Congress to function legally and promised to release Nelson Mandela. Upon hearing this declaration Mandela's wife, Winnie, reportedly told her boyfriend in bed that night, "Lose my number, 'cause when my man comes home ain't no more us understand?"
Feb 3rd
On this day in Black history in 1989, after a stroke two weeks previous, South African President P. W. Botha resigned as leader of the National Party. Some African-Americans in the US responded to this news at that time by celebrating at the club and trying out the latest sandwiches from Burger King. Also Jheri Curl activator was finally pulled from store shelves due to folks finally coming to their senses.
Feb 4th
On this day in Black history Lucius Septimius Severus, the first African born Roman emporer who ruled from 193 to 211 A.D. died. His legacy is survived in the US by the names Cleophus, Rufus, and Melvin.
Feb 5th
On this day in Black history in 1972, Bob Douglas became the first African-American elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, paving the way for future black NBA players to enjoy other aspects of the game like wealth building, product endorsements, movie roles, and interracial marriages and affairs.
