Diet-gospel vs. Christian-lite
I think the greater issue is the historically poor nutritional diet of the African American community. I did not eat a steamed vegetable until I was an adult. Up to that point everything was cooked to death in butter. The Black church has been notorious for pushing fried chicken and fried fish dinners after Service and as fundraisers for the various needs of the congregation.
However, I see the high obesity rate of black Christians as being a problem in the African American community overall regardless of faith. When I was a teenager, I was in the minority as a "chubby" girl. But now, kids are so out of shape and obese that its shameful! A few months ago, I was out with my sister and youngest nephew (he's 13) and he wanted something to eat and we were near a Checkers. This kid tried to TWO double-something burgers -- tried cause I stopped him mid-order. He thought I was crazy! He was just ordering what his friends order, his brother orders, etc.
In order to truly attack the obesity problem in our community, we have to start educating one another about eating whole foods, about steaming, baking , and grilling as opposed to frying. We have to become more active and learn to make better choices. Fortunately, things are slowly changing. In my church, for example we have an exercise and fitness ministry. I know of other churches with the same. We have a long way to go, but it will take those of us who know better to take stance and volunteer to provide different alternatives.
I don't necessarily think surgery is the answer for everyone, but I truly believe education and access is key. Imagine if a fresh fruit stand sat next door to every McDonald's in our community and fruit cost less than a value meal?

Amen, Sista. I agree with that.

True but you know the minute the subject is even broached in public our folks will be changing churches in droves trying to find one that ain't "pickin' on them."

That's great. We should also start having nutritional training classes and food education classes as well. Wow, I'm seeing a way to make my millions materializing before my eyes with that alone.

I agree. I wasn't trying to imply that they all needed surgery, but I will state again for the record that they need a change.

Yep and old habits will have those same folks running home to cook those apples in Crisco and dousing them with cups of sugar for taste.

I wonder if you show the Christians in the Bible that gluttony is a sin, what will their response be? Will they feel "God is trying to tell you something"? Or is He picking at them too?
ETA: That never worked for me. When I was hungry, I was hungry; and I overate! But I wasn't holier than thou claiming I was doing the Lord's work by stuffing myself again.

That's just it. They don't see it as gluttony or gluttonous behavior at all. To them, paraphrasing what someone said earlier in response my original post. "God made me this way and that's that..." They would see it more as them going against god to change their eating habits or try and lose the weight.
It's going to take some serious intervention for them to act and do better.

After reading this earlier today, I had to search and find the clips online - I watched Whitney's segment and umm..... her stylist needs to be shot, stabbed and burnt up! There's no good reason Whitney can't wear a flowing baby doll style or a loose empire waist line - but the days of the tube dress are DONE - Cris Angel ain't got enough magic to make that body flat again......
However - I did tear up listening - there were glimpses of the old Whitney in there - that sound, that tone - that voice moved mountains in the day, and she's definitely improved - I wouldn't suggest she EVER try to tour again..... but if she could just come out like that and get a lil itty bit better - she can still deliver da 'good's......
BUT
old girl in the black dress needs to head down to the county bail bondsman to put something on her charge of malicious assult for the hellified whoopin she put on them shoes!!!!!! I shutter to think what her pinky toes looked like after being unpacked from that cage..... lawd!!! After a certain weight, you can still be cute - but in some things you make other folks uncomfortable and worried about the material stability and construction of shyt!!!!! LOL

Personally, I think she needs to return to gospel and stay there. The Pop music scene has changed so much over the last decade until even chart toppers like Janet and Madonna can't buy a hit these days (and somehow these two will still let someone talk them into trying to make a CD.) And while she had a chance to become a huge name in the movies, that's shot. So if she wants to stay current and do the dayum thang then cross over to gospel.
