For a lot of people that frequent these boards, depression, isolation, loneliness etc... has been a major issue for us. I know that I have come a long way since my high school days. I was one of the biggest introverted nerds around. I did a 180 when I finally decided to get my life on track in regards to my education and career path. In college I started to push the envelope by started to take risks and place myself in social situations...where I had to talk and interact with people. I also took a presentation class to get me comfortable with speaking in front of people. This all served as a good foundation and put me much further ahead when it came to addressing my other issues. If this had not been the case, I would have been even more of a couch potato and shunning social situations at any given chance....further exacerbating my weight issues. Of course, I struggled but in looking back it could have been MUCH MUCH worse.

I say all of this too say....please do everything you can not to isolate. I know that it might be hard to make friends for some...like me...I only need one or two good close friends....the rest are associates, buddies or running partners...whatever word fits best.  Trust is such an important factor and should not be easily given..particularly to those who are not deemed worthy of that trust.

BUT there is nothing wrong with getting out and having fun! You can do this with anybody...total strangers too.  As long as you are in a safe environment...there is plenty of fun to be had out there among the masses.

Here are a few of my personal suggestions to get you out there and enjoy life...please feel free to add to the list...whats working for you:

1.) First, you can go to
www.meetup.com to find groups with common interest in your area. They have groups for sushi lovers, groups for movie goers, groups for hikers, groups for photography buffs, groups for readers, groups for salsa dancing and groups for any other interest under the sun.  Log on and start getting out there and mingling.

2.) Take a class (cooking, Karate, art, music, nature etc...)

3.) Join a recreational club

4.) Access travel options through AAA or AARP

5.) Do some volunteer service

6.) Join the mall walking club (but don't take any money or your a@ss will be like me shopping afterwards.

7.) Take advantage of low cost or free activities at local colleges in your area (check out their websites)

8.) Rescue a animal and then join a club for cat or dog lovers. (walk the dog to get exercise for both of you)

9.) Check out the offerings at area camp grounds...during the spring and summer...they plan a variety of family friendly activities.  (okay...black folks...I like doing this type of stuff...try it you might like it)

10.) When you are just not sure...do a Google search to come up with many options on your own. Just type in your area of interest and your home city to see what out there for you to do.

Happy Hunting....Hope you all spend your time doing something fun and exhilarating.

ISOLATION IS THE ENEMY!  I love my solitude but I know I tend to isolate when things aren't as I want them to be.  There is a difference.

You may not be in the situation you want.  You may not have much fun $$$.  Get out there anyway.

Lots of functions are free or low cost at libraries or other public facilities.  The more you get out the more you'll learn about what's out there.

I don't want to be out, I want to stay isolated because I don't want anyone to see my newly adopted huge ass and gut.
