OT: Questions for parents of adult children
Happy New Year Sue !!!
My son is 25 and earned his Masters Degree at 23.
How did they finance their higher education?
Full Scholarship ( Our Own Ohio State U. )
How did you transition them out of your house?
He graduated from HS in 2003 and lived on campus for 2 years then an Apartment the remaining 2 years. He only spent his freshman year summer at home. Therefore the transition was flawless.
How did you handle issues regarding contributing to the household and budgeting?
Being that Ced was attending school out of the city, he was not living at home therefore no home expenses occurred. He never returned home to live.
Upon graduation, he remained in Columbus, married and doing great.

How did they finance their higher education?
Debt. Student loans and a mortgage.
How did you transition them out of your house?
Mine is an independent type. As soon as she was able, she worked it out for herself. She's in grad school full time but she'd rather be on her own.
How did you handle issues regarding contributing to the household and budgeting?
I never required a contribution since I did not need it and she did not run up bills. Her money is for her education and that's how she uses it. We still help with some things like auto insurance, keep a family plan for cell phones, etc. Until she graduates and establishes herself in her career, her dad and I will continue to help out. She never asks for anything. We snoop to find out what she needs.

LV'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
So Bless...working for a Institution of Higher Leaning...I cant stress enough how important it is for students to also do their own research about scholarships that are available out here. With the advent of google its so easy to find Foundations or Endowment Funds that have monies for students AND they might not be privy to this information via their high schools. I have run into quite a few students who were successful at securing Fellowships on their own without assistance derived the info the high school counselors or Financial Aid Office's hand out. Wish you well with this next stage of parenthood. I will be there soon.
Dont have adult childen yet So Blessed but I am going to hang onto my current job so that they have the tuition remission to fall back on if they dont meet bar for the scholarships. Encouraging my daughters' sports and musical talents is also another fall back. I refuse to let them or me go into debt if I can prevent it. They will get part time jobs and live at home while at school if needed. I won't mind putting up with the personalities for a little while until the first degree to prevent the debt. It would be to all of our benefit in the long run.
