Ummm, I'm gonna veto the afro, lol.

I know we shouldn't have to conform to their idea of a norm but my hair is natural right now it is flat ironed but that was because I needed a trim and a sistah is too cheap not to get my $35 worth...anyway I digress, I usually wear it pulled back in a bun. It's really easy to do; your ends aren't exposed to wind and crap...and the best of it, is the suits think you are trying to play ball instead of the rug out from under them.

Only you know the truth...

So, what is the basis for the statement?  Did they give specific examples?

No, no specifics were given. And I doubt they'll be coming as the nurse manager that wrote the reviews has left the company.

If there are no specifics examples and the person who wrote the review is not there, I think you need to point that out in your comments as opposed to defending such a vague allegation --i.e. point out the difficulty in responding because you don't know what she's talking about.

What is the role of the annual review at your place of employment?

It serves as pretty much the decision maker as to if and how much your annual increase will be.  If there are continuous issues that have been dealt with throughout the year the annual review time is when more serious disiplinary actions are taken (I'm guessing as I've neverr been too much of a trouble maker at work).  At this time they also give you goals to work on for the new year, for example last year my goal was to increase the frequency I work as charge nurse.  For the next year my goal is supposed to be to work on more corprate driven projects.

I was watching a Dave Chapelle rerun the other night and they did a skit called "When Keeping it Real Goes Wrong".  The brother told them how he really felt and wound up in the hood washing windshields for tips.

One of my favorite quotes related to employment is from the movie Ben Hur when the centurian tells the galley slaves "We keep you alive to serve this ship.  So row well and live."  That is pretty much the attitude of corporate America.  It took me a while to figure out the rules.  Once you learn them, you can exploit them to benefit YOU.

Save your REAL self, your AUTHENTIC self for the people you love and respect.  Other folk really don't deserve to know that much about you.  It's not about being fake.  This is about adapting to survive in a culture that has different values, just as you would have to adapt if you went to another country.

When you go to work, put on your game face.  It looks like this:

You're not there to make friends or to feel appreciated.  Your primary mission is to come home with a pay check with the least amount of stress and conflict possible.  Your strategy to attain that mission will depending on your responsibilities and your environment.

Build cordial relationships wherever possible.  This is important.  This is how you find out what's going on.  People talk to you when they perceive you as friendly.

Do your very best work even if you don't like your job or the people with whom you work.  If your name is on it, it is a reflection on you.

If you do have to tell someone something that they don't have to hear, be very careful how you do it.   Example:  I have people approach me to take on projects quite often.  Sometimes the requests are ill-conceived and would wind up being a lot of busy work for me with no real benefit for the organization.  I've had to learn diplomatic ways of telling them I'm not doing it without making them feel like they're stupid.  Sometimes it involves taking a part of their idea and creating something else from it.  Everybody walks away feeling good.

Please don't do anything militant right now.  OK?

Give it some thought.  Think about your long term plans.  How long do you want to stay there?  Would you like to be promoted up?  What skills would you need to have?  Who in the organization is in a position to help make that happen?

All excellent advice.

do you think I bring the 'Mack' to work?  heyyllll naw! Don't nobody wanna know that side of me! LOL - I would have cursed my boss out a million times over by now.......

I've always thought of work as a full time acting gig - they give you the part and you come up with the performance to meet the audience's needs.

There's a chick on here I used to work with - she got on BAF a lot more after leaving the company and it took her MONTHS to realize who I was! She had NO IDEA how I really am - she still thinks I have multiple personalities - lol

I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions!  I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

she still thinks I have multiple personalities -

You do.  You could be some kind of Missionary even though you'd try to carry it more like a vigilante to keep with your image..
