Hi Fam,

Me n hubby watched it on youtube today.  We were both off from work.  I have a few thoughts.

Regarding The 60 yr old former VP:
1.  He should have dyed or cut his beard while job hunting.
2.  He's so use to making the big money that he's not willing to take the big humble move and get a job at BestBuy, Walmart, hotel, etc. as a supervisor, auditor, anything.  They said the household bills were about $6000 monthly and his wife brought home $4000.  You mean he couldn't get a gig to bring home $2500 a month to help his family and maybe a bottle of Ms. Clairol for his quickly aging wife? (I caught that too)  I understand that it's hard to go from the penthouse to unemployed, but daggone, help where you can.  There were several times I heard him saying to recruiters that "positions in sales weren't his field"- Scrreeeech!!!!!!!!!!!!  Say what????!!!!!  In that case I guess unployment is better.

Regarding the high-end couple losing their house:
1. Another instance of keeping up with the Jones' and "Look what I got y'all".
2. They have ruined their smart, beautiful and talented daughter.

3. Sorry to say, the momma messed that whole situation up and the sucker daddy stood by and watched it happen.
Double Aay said she broke some off for him when he get's mad, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he had a sweet thing breaking some off regularly at work or church while he just let wifey do whatever..

Regarding Lil' brother that went to Kean:
1. I was mad when he said he couldn't wait to get out of that apartment- NO WISDOM from the start!!  The first thing out of my mouth was housing is expensive!  No wonder you're dumb and broke!!
2. I understand having a dream school.  Some things should be worked for.  He should have stayed in that apartment, went to community college, got a part time job and transfered after he learned how to successfully fill out scholarship essays..  Come on now!  How stupid could you be??

Word.  He's probably a Taurus.  Those dudes are usually mad stubborn.  He probably heard that advice but chose to ignore it because he wants to be honest about his age.  What a dumbazz?!

2.  He's so use to making the big money...

Yep and that's a big part of the problem.  The way the world works now has changed and being with a company for 25 years means squat these days.

You mean he couldn't get a gig to bring home $2500 a month to help his family and maybe a bottle of Ms. Clairol for his quickly aging wife? (I caught that too)

Dang.  Y'all sistas be on it, Yo.    Nothing gets pass y'all.

In that case I guess unployment is better.

Hey...  The Lawd will provide.

Jack + **** = Jack****

2. They have ruined their smart, beautiful and talented daughter.

So sad.

3. Sorry to say, the momma messed that whole situation up and the sucker daddy stood by and watched it happen.

Yep.  He saw what was happening and just folded up on it like a newspaper.

Double Aay said she broke some off for him when he get's mad, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he had a sweet thing breaking some off regularly at work or church while he just let wifey do whatever..

Actually, I would.  Romance without finance is a gott-dayum nuisance.  He may have boffed a few of the ushers, receptionists, and such, but no sista's gonna keep coming around on the low and he can't even splurge on her 'erry now 'n again.  Remember dis ninja was broke.

2. I understand having a dream school.  Some things should be worked for.  He should have stayed in that apartment, went to community college, got a part time job and transfered after he learned how to successfully fill out scholarship essays..  Come on now!  How stupid could you be??

Oh you don't want the answer to that question.  You see how the good reverend got him a job and the doofy bastid refused to even go to work once he got into college.  No real role models in his life.  Trust me, he can get a lot more stupid.

One more thing has been bothering me since watching this story.

God never promised us a cushy ride.  It's like the story about the guy who drownded in the flood because he was "trusting God" and God is like, "But I sent an SUV, then a boat and then a helicopter.."

I jus****ched a news story about a 63 year old white woman who lost her business and has to beat the homeless guy to the dumpsters for recycleable items to make $30 a day so she can pay her rent.

I think CNN shows these types of things to expose the false arrogance in our community.  And they deal that race card from the bottom of the deck.   Mr. ex VP is showing some of the same arrogance and immaturity as the aspiring actor and the BMW salesman & family.  Where do these folk get off thinking they are too good to get a <$100K job, going to community college and working to get the grades and money to go to a better school or making your wife and teen give up shopping & the credit cards and get pay-as-you-go phones and a job!  What happened to the mentality that said there was honor in doing what you have to to pay your mortgage first and then the rest of the bills.

I feel like dude at the end of School Daze,  "WAKE UP!"

Boy....you guys are tough!!!  (Big smile) I watched the program after reading all of the comments listed here.

The family losing their home....

I know that they appeared to be keeping up with the Jones but I think these people got caught up just as many of our friends and families did.  They were sold a dream of having more than they can pay for.  They may have built their house with money made from real estate deals made in the sub-prime market. But at the time, the sub-prime market deals were what being sold to a class of people who could not see what would happen down the road.  Sub-prime loans were sold to people who didn't have a small fortune in the bank, or credit to back up more solid loans.  The real estate market was rising and people couldn't get homes are reasonable prices.  These people didn't just build a little house they built a big home!  But the house was the HOME of their DREAMS! They built the house are are having a real heavy heart letting go of something that they dreamed of, created and have lived in for a number of years.  A home above their means, not at the time they built it, but today...absolutely!  But do you give up just because the world says you can't afford that house...no you hang on.
The finance company let them stay for 2 years without a payment.  I would have stayed too!  The difference, I would have been doing everything in my power to put together some kind of payment including renting it to someone who could have afforded it while I was going through my loss of employment period.

The older gentleman....

Yes, he has a beard.  Yes, it's gray.  Yes, he applied to 200 jobs that weren't necessarily bottom of the barrel, entry level jobs.  The man said he doctored his resume to include leaving off his former titles so as not to look over qualified, and he applied for positions he knew he had no experience in just to find work.  Our society is such that we will hire a 22 year old just because they have a degree over a 58 year old, highly skilled worker who may or may not have a degree but has some gray facial hair.

His family has an income of $4,000 and expenses of $6,000.  I live a life where my family is a 2 income family and we rely on both income to cover our monthly expenses, save and live life.  Should one income or the other suddenly disappear, we too, would be in a position that if we did not replace that income before our savings ran out, one of us...(not saying which one) might be forced to do something a little different to make ends meet.  Was the gentleman doing all he could?  Not for me to judge.  Should he be forced to shave, or as some of you would suggest, dye his beard just to get hired??? No!!!!!  I don't think he looked that old and I think what he should be forced to do is put applications in everywhere possible, go get additional training, invent a job....at 58 you have life skills that could generate some extra money even if it is babysitting!  Do you know what day care cost are like today?  Shoot get 4 or 5 kids per week and you have an extra $1000 per week!

To the boy in school.....

Bravo for thinking that you need to get a degree.  Thank goodness that you think far enough in advance to realize that you need skills in something other than acting.  Not that you can't make a living acting, teaching acting, working with actors or anything else creative because you can but the harsh reality is most don't.  This young man said he wanted to take business courses.   Even if he makes it as an actor, he will be smart enough to prevent ending up as one of the many actors who have lost their fortunes to mismanagement or embezzlement.

Giving your 10% to the Church....

Do I think the family of the unemployed man who gives 10% should give that 10% to the church or use it to pay their bills?...how dare me sit in judgment.  But truth be told, they are surviving just the same!  Their bills are getting paid, maybe not on time but PAID just the same.  Is there food on the table? I didn't hear them say otherwise and they sure looked healthy enough.  Is it hard and would it be easier each month to meet their expenses with the $400 (10% of their $4000 income) given to the Church?  I'm sure it would be easier as $400 is a lot when you are $2000 short each month.  But if you believe in what you are doing, and what your PROVIDER has taught you $400 a month or $4000 a month won't make a difference.  If your faith has taught you that giving when you don't have it to give is a WORK that shows your LORD that you have FAITH...then give every dime you can.  This family, in my opinion, is in a better position than the family in the house that hasn't paid their mortgage in 2 years.  Why?  Because for them they are at least attempting to provide for themselves.  The people in the house only seemed solely focused on finding a loop whole to keep their home.  Of course, that is what the producers of the program wanted to focus on.

For me...being black in America, or any race, and in debt is a no different because of your race.  When you are in debt there are three stages.  In debt and you are able to pay your bills, in debt and struggling but still attempting to pay your bills or in debt and just don't give a ***k and not paying!  The feeling created by each stage is not changed due to your race.  When you have ample funds to pay your monthly bills, be you black or white, you write the check without a care.  Struggling to pay the bills brings worry and juggling no matter what race you are.  In fact, being black gives a little advantage here because we have watched generations of friends and families juggle and we know tricks that others can't even begin to know!  Who do you think invented the game of Robbing Peter to Pay Paul?  Not one person here can honestly say that they have never been in a place in their lifetimes when something went off track, not as they planned and just went horribly wrong.  I feel that for each of these three families, they never intended to be where they are at this point in their lives.  Do I think each family could do more to help themselves....again, who I AM TO JUDGE?  Turth be told, I could do more to help myself like getting off my behind and going for a walk instead of sitting here typing all of this!!!

Bottom line, PEOPLE don't be so hard!  Dang!  I expected to see some beat down brother with a collar around his neck being lead around by his she devil wife, and a black Father Time with a Santa Clause appearance passing out resumes.  Not to mention the black Bullet Head you all described!!!  In fact, I just saw people, just like me, my friends and my family who were all in places in their lives they never dreamed they would be.  Some working a little harder and a little faster than others to get out of their predicaments.  Some with plans, some without a clue and some with guidance, some without.... but

But (<--- big butt here)

Just because someone was selling doesn't mean that they should have been buying what was being sold.  Bottom line they should have used their heads and not their hearts, which I think is the real lesson here.  It's fine to dream and great to chase that dream; but have enough sense to adjust your belief as you go accordingly.

That's where they fell short in my opinion.

Personally, I don't think that it's because he looked old with the facial hair as to why he wasn't getting hired or that it was preventing him from finding work.  In all honesty he didn't adjust his understanding to realize that at 58 and a half a major company is not going to try and invest 3 years or so grooming and training him to be their VP only to have him retire in about 3 more years afterwards.  He should bill himself as a consultant and he would have gotten way more responses and offers.

To the boy in school.....

This young man said he wanted to take business courses.

True but he failed to go to work at the job the Pastor set up for him, therefore he's not taking care of business.  Stone him!!!  sike

I'm not so sure about that one right there.  The moderator said that we blacks were hit the hardest with the recession.

In fact, I just saw people, just like me, my friends and my family who were all in places in their lives they never dreamed they would be.

...and that, my sista, is the point.   Remove all of the stereotypes that you just mentioned, strip away all of the preconceived notions of who spends money like water on what frivolous things and what you'll have are these folks highlighted on the program.  The sad part, at least in my eyes, is that none of them learned anything as a result of their situation.
