Biggest Loser or Biggest Exploiter?

I see the pain of the contestant’s obesity being exploited for ratings and shock value. I don’t think I have ever seen the first show of the season.  Are the the “auditions" to be on the show new this season?   Having  people share their story and pain and compete for a slot on the show appeared cruel and exploitative to me. If you watched the biggest loser tonight what was your opinion?

Listening to the pain of the contestant's did scare me straight to use my tool better and treat it like a gift.

I have never watched it except for a few minutes when it was on in the cardio room at the gym and directly in front of me.  I went back to my book.

Its exploiting fat people as entertainment.  Most of all it exists for branding and diet product sales.  I refuse to support the diet rip off industry.  The saddest part is that once the contest is over the weight will return.  The contest enviornment does not translate irl.  Once the season is done, contestants are left twisting in the wind.

I totally agree with MSW.  I don****ch the show because I dont agree with it.  If they are there to really try to help people lose weight and get healthy, why do they kick people off the show.  To me its horrible because they set people up for failure.  They have them workout 6 hours a day and noone in real life can do that.  So I just feel its horrible.  Exploitation at its best.  Why more people arent upset about that show is beyond me.

In my opinion Beachbody has THE very best weight loss products around.  Would you like to join me on my P90X Journey? Please click the link below to Join My Team or to learn more about the products:

I watch the show and exercise on the commercials.  But this season is a bit surprising to me because every single contestant that was trying to compete to be on the show had a tragedy, every single one of them lost someone in their lives.  I didn't like that because it's like ok, do I have to have someone die in order to be on the show, what happened to just being fat now I have to have a tragedy and be fat.

MSW they do have product placement on the show but they really don't pu**** where it's overwhelming so I don't agree that it is about product selling at all.

As far as the people gaining the weight back it kind of reminds me of WLS.   They give us the surgery and bam we are on our own, it is up to us to find support groups and the rest and most people don't go to support groups.  There are so many more failures in the WLS community than there was just 7 years ago and it's sad, and damit i'm one of them.

And why the hell are all the black folks messing up and not and being slow and not getting on the dam show.  There better be some black folks get on in this second hour.

I can't really say much more cause i'm only a hour into the show so I may even have to come back and edit this long ass post.  LOL.

But anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Lee I remembered what you said about exercising during the commercials so that WAS my plan but between crying and getting angry I did not exercise during commercials and eventually I had to turn the channel.  They pushed the people too hard and exploited them to much for my taste.

The biggest shame is their methods are not reasonable or sustainable.  Fat people are the only folks left to mock and riddicule with impunity.

Shock effect and humiliation boost ratings.  The show does not need to push product or choose which merchandise to spend ad dollars on.  Its marketing through branding/ name recognition.  From jillianmichaels dvd's to biggest looser cookbooks the show makes names household words even if you've never watched it.  Consumer marketing psychology at its finest.

Its been done in children's programing for decades.  Ninja turtles, pokemon, xmen and the like are not created simply as tv programs.  The merchandising is all part of the concept.  There is no need to advertise during the show.  Once it becomes popular there is instant recognition at retail.  The program makes the consumer connection.  Video game, tshirt, snack food, even onions of all things.  Kids and adults who buy for kids gravitate to it.

Hi Pokerchips,

I don'****ch it but I have seen bits and pieces of it in

past seasons.  I too feel like it is exploitation and I don't

like how they take such obese and out of shape people

and kick them into hard physical exercise.  No way should

you go your sofa to pushing that hard.  They won't be

satisfied until somebody dies!!!!

I agree with you they pushed the people so hard last night that I kept saying law suit..law suit.  Even Couch to 5K builds us up for the grind the Biggest Loser just takes people from the couch and starts them at full speed! So unhealthy and scary!

I have watched the show from time to time. I have to admit that it seems like the contestants are getting bigger and bigger.  I did watch the entire season last time and it seemed painful for many of them to talk about their lives.  I did not realize that it was back on again. I will have to remember this on Tuesday's now.
