Alopecia

I knew that my hair was thinner and coming out but until yesterday I had no idea that I had alopecia in several spots. I was twisting my hair and saw 2 of the smooth bald spots myself and felt some areas in the back that I could feel but not see. I've had alopecia before, years ago and had to get shots in the bald area but I've never had this many spots. I pray I don't go completely bald because I know that some people lose ALL of their hair. I need to make an appt with my dermatologist.   I need to get back on my biotin and get more protein. It's a good thing that I had enough hair for 3 people or I would be looking for head scarves, hats and wigs right now.  Has anyone else had alopecia?

I have not but my daughter gets it periodically since long before her wls.  She has never lost all of her hair but patches have been pretty big and/ or numerouse.  Fortunately her hair regrows fast once treated so her scalp was never visable.

Hey Neena,

Please make sure its alopecia because my sister has lupus and the reason she knew she had it was because she was getting those bald patches and went to the doctor and found out she had lupus.

Thanks for the responses. Treena, thanks for that. I've been tested for lupus in the past but not lately, although they did a sed rate and bloodwork for any inflammation in my body. I'm going to make an appt. with my derm. (she's a black woman) and I love her, she knows her stuff. I will bring this to my pcp's attention also. I never would have thought lupus.

Hey Neena,

How are you otherwise?  I know you were having a lot of problems in the past.  Is everything okay now?  Prayerfully it is.

Are there changes in your  nails and skin also? If there is a systematic problem-sever anemia, malabsorbtion, vitamin definciencies, or immune issues like lupus; the hair, skin, and nails are the first to change. you should def see and endocrhnologist. Like when I am as big as I am now, I dont get my flow, I get more body hair and you can see long whole strands of hair fall out. If there is a hormal inbalance due to weight loss, you may want birth control to keep your levels in check but talk to your dr. I wish you the best

You know I have seen dramatic changes in my nails, hair and skin. My skin and hair is super dry and my nails peel. The texture of my hair has changed also, it's never been so coarse before, it makes me want to relax it even though I haven't done that in 14 yrs !!! I have a bad hair day everyday.

I asked my pcp to see an endocrinologist for my menopause type symptoms and she said that wasn't reason enough to see an endo. I'm going to talk to her about these other symtoms and get her to refer me to one now. Thanks for the info.

Treena, I'm doing better thanks for asking. ((hugs))
