Since it's a gift... I would check with the family members who will be receiving it. How do they feel about it? I had always assumed my maiden name was a slave name but turns out it was and it wasn't. The slave owner was their father and he raised all his slave children as house slaves...they helped him run the plantation. His black kids ended up owning the plantation after slavery ended. I've been trying to figure out how they pulled that one off since he died a couple of years before slavery ended and his last wife sold all his slave kids and their mom.. they came back and ended up with the plantation.
We have a family crest as well since that part of the family came to this country from England during the founding of the colonies. My family would accept a crest with no problem because they feel it is their real surname because the lineage is valid and not an appropriated or made up last name.
