The Call "round midnite...
i knew it would could come...although i must admit i didn't know what day..i knew it would be round midnite...when the rest of the world is asleep and the body lies still.. the mind wanders.. so i jumped off the couch pausing the DVR.. the 770 number blinking up at me from cell phone like a crying newborn for it's midnite feed..."Babygirl."
Its been exactly one year since she moved out..claiming her "grownness"..i can still hear her words as she bolted out the door that dreadful day.."I'm eighteeen I'm grown and i can do what i want." I didn't chase her this time..sometimes life can be the best teacher..so i let her go..told her i loved her and i would pray for her..I asked the ancestors to watch over her on her journey to to discover herself and made due each passing day..
"Hello?" "Is this Mr. Harris" "It is." my stomach knotted up like an Afro in water.. i held my breath paused my breathing braced myself for the worst. "This is Nurse so and so from Grady Hospital in Atlanta Georgia. Your daughter Krystle was brought in -" "Is she alright?" I could not wait to hear why she was there. The fact that she was there was enough to set off my panic button. "She's stable Sir. She asked me to call you." "Where's her mother?" "She refused to allow us to call her. You are her the only person she asked us to call. Are you in Atlanta Sir?" "No.but i'm on my way." Where are you coming from?" "New Jersey." "Oh so it may take you some time to get here." "I will be there by sunrise sister. Tell my daughter i'm on my way. Please do not release her until i get there." A slight pause on the other end.. "Will do Mr. Harris." her voice softened to relieve me of the burden. "Take your time Sir. We are taking good care of her."
I grabbed the laptop. Next flight out of Philly was in three hours. I booked it and thanked God for the stash i saved from my income tax check. Like i said, i knew the call would come and i would have to be ready. No time to pack. just grab a few toiletries and and an extra pair of drawers and a polo shirt in my overnite bag. And i was out..
I called the hospital security from the airport.. this was one of the few times i was thankful for the badge..I spoke to the night shift commander identified myself and asked for some professional courtesy .. my request was a simple one.."HAve your ER post keep an eye on my daughter, i'll be there in a few hours." The plane boarded and left on time a miracle for those who travel out of philly.. I smiled out the window at the starry heavens as the captain announced we had caught a good tail wind travelling south and the two hour trip would take approx 90 minutes...I saw the image of my God softly blowing at the plane's tail sending me on my way to do His work..
I high stepped it out of Atlanta's airport and jumped into the back of a waiting cab. "Grady Hospital no stops and double time baby." i opened the door as the cab puled into the ER parking lot hit the driver off grab my overnite and rushed through the doors. I sidestep a line of sistas and went through a metal detector without dropping my bag on the examination table. I discreetly displayed my ID to the guard.. "Mr. Harris?" "Yes" "Come with me please" The guard led me through a maze of security doors and hallways.. i had to ask the question.. "metal detectors in a hospital? Its like like in the ATL my man" "Welcome to the dirty south"
He led me around a busy nurse's station to a stretcher pushed up against a wall.. She was lying under a dingy white hospital sheet no doubt hiding from the reality of her situation.. I slowly pulled back the sheet exposing her sleeping face.. and at that moment i was back in the hospital delivery room eighteen years ago..watching over her as she slept in innocent slumber.. i wondered then as i did now.. what she was dreaming about.. what dreams have come and which have gone...i caressed her cheek still soft like a new born..her hair braided and broken.. and i bent over and kissed my sleeping beauty and she opened her eyes.....her eyes focused in on me just as they did the first time she ever opened them.. She weakly lifted her arms to shelter her eyes from the bright fluorescent hallway lights.....And just as she had done then she open those arms up waiting for my embrace ...... "Hi Daddy"
My babygirl is home..
