NETTLETON, Miss. (WTVA) - The city school board voted unanimously Friday to take race out of student elections.

The decision came after a parent complained about the policy.

Brandy Springer posted on her Facebook account that students of a certain race could only run for specific offices at Nettleton Middle School.

In a statement released by the district Friday, it was revealed the practice had been in use for more than 30 years with whites and blacks rotating among offices annually.

"It is the belief of the current administration that these procedures were implemented to help ensure minority representation and involvement in the student body."

Here is the statement released by the district Friday concerning the use of race in student elections:

"After being notified of a grievance regarding upcoming student elections at Nettleton Middle School, research was conducted that evidenced that the current practices and procedures for student elections have existed for over 30 years.  It is the belief of the current administration that these procedures were implemented to help ensure minority representation and involvement in the student body.  It is felt the intent of these election procedures was to ensure African-American representation in each student office category through an annual rotation basis."

"It is our hope and desire that these practices and procedures are no longer needed to help ensure minority representation and involvement.  Furthermore, the Nettleton School District acknowledges and embraces the fact that we are growing in ethnic diversity and that the classifications of Caucasian and African-American no longer reflect our entire student body."

"Therefore, beginning immediately, student elections at Nettleton School District will no longer have a classification of ethnicity.  It is our intent that each student has equal opportunity to seek election for any student office.  Future student elections will be monitored to help ensure that this change in process and procedure does not adversely affect minority representation in student elections."

Why am I not surprised it was in Mississippi?   My people!!!!

As recently as a couple of years ago, my brother was telling me there are still segregated proms in his town.  There's always an "official" prom at the school, but the white parents (not all of them, just the racist ones who can't afford to put their kids in the segregated private schools) rent a place and have a separate dance for their kids.

Still, I'd rather deal with a Mississippi good ol' boy any day because at least you never have to wonder where you stand with them.  They either like you or they don't.

I say this all the time and people look at me like I'm crazy.  So glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

Believe me, I am with you...I lived in Alabama for 13 years and in Florida for 10 and I give the good ol' boy credit for putting his feelings out on the table.  It's the closeted Klansman that you gotta watch out for.

Land of the free, home of the brave, yeah right.  I must have ben crazy checking out life in the South.  If similar **** is happening in N FL/ S GA it would not surpse me at all.

Just like the flying klan flags did not surprise me during the last presidenial election.  Damn, ignorance really bites.  Fact is, racism is an American institution where ever you may be.  A foreigner who wants to assimilate just needs to start hating Black folks.  Instant real Amerikkkan.
