Do you have a friend or family member that has a mental illness?

Have you taken the time to learn about their illness?

Education is key to erasing the stigma with mental illness.

Learning about what they deal with will help you and them in the long run.

Fear of the unknown is understandable.

When you have the capability to educate yourself and you choose not to
is just ignorance.

Knowledge is power!

Fabulous places to start educating yourself and others are listed below.

For those of you who don't know already I have Bipolar I, Borderline Personality Disorder, OCD, PTSD, and Anxiety.

I take medication daily, go to Cognitive Behavorial Therapy bi-weekly, and attend mental health recovery support group meetings weekly.

I also facilitate two mental health recovery support group meetings a month in the DFW area.

As of July 19, 2010 I will be a NAMI Peer to Peer Mentor Trainer.

I am so glad you posted this Teena because I suffer with severe Clinical Depression and I have not been one to keep it a secret.  You are so right, Education is key.  Unfortunately in the black community it is frowned upon to admit that you have a mental illness.  Just recently Ron Artest from the LA Lakers thanked his psychiatrist for helping him to stay calm in the last game of the finals.  Oh my goodness, they had a field day making fun of him.  I was really saddened to see the reaction to him saying that.  However, he has helped more people than he knows.

Keep up the fight sis, you are really giving back to people you know *****ally needs this support.  I totally commend you on that.  Know that you are not alone in the fight for educating others about this illness.

May God continue to keep you strong on this journey.

Grace and Peace

T, You know how close to my family this illness has been. My exhusband is bi-polar and has OCD whi*****ludes rituals and hording.  I agree 100%, education is key for both the patient and for those that love them.  Families really need support as well.  Awesome post sweetheart.

Love is all there is, ever was or ever will be...
