Rny or DS peeps...

I have made the decision to do the DS but am still worried about the need to be on pills the rest of my life. So I am leaving the option of RNY open for now. But as I view the BAF, I notice a lot more RNY people than DS and wondered what made you decide to do either over the other?
My decision is the fact that I can still eat a wide variety of things after I lose my weight and also the DS has a higher chance of helping me keep the weight off long term. But as I said, I don't like the issue with malnutrition nor the chance of gas or body odor. So what were some of yours?

 Good Morning!

1. You will need to take pills for the rest of your life with BOTH surgeries.

2. DS or VSG wasn't an option because of my insurance.  I would have preferred the VSG.

3. Malnutrition is possible with any WLS. Body odor is a myth and gas happens to all of us. I know I can clear a room  if I eat too many carbs.

4. Take a look at your present health. If *I* suffered from diabetes, this would be a no brainer for me. DS would MOS DEF be the way to go because of its' cure rate.

I decided on the DS because of the VSG stomach. I also felt I needed the malabosorption to keep the weight off down the line. Also I like I don't have to limit my fat. The low carb diet is the easiest one so this was a no brainer for me.  Also I know 3 ppl with RNY and they either didnt get to goal or gained back. To be fair I did not know anyone with the DS but I did a lot of research and it seemed like the right fit. I even looked on the revision board and did not like what I saw as far as the Lap-band and RNYers.

Now as far as the vitaminsI am still struggling with that. I work midnights so my schedule is kind of funky so I'm working on that. I really don't mind the vitamins though.
The gas....the gas.... its when you eat carbs. I actually am ok with rice and potatoes (small amounts like 2oz) but pasta and bread......whoooo hooo that is some funky uncontrolable stuff there. LOL. Oh and too much sugar will cause diarrhea.   I have no body odor issues. Those few that do has to take antibiotics to clear the gut of the bad bacteria and replace it with good bacteria. Once that is done no more odor!!

5' 7 3/4 I claim 5'8 SW/CW/GW 267/144/160 <---Dr's goal. My goal was 165lbs. Trying to build muscle. So, unsure what weight I'll be at  once I meet my fitness goals.

Hey sistah, I am a revision to the DS from a failed VBG of 22+ plus years. I weighed 354 on 1/29/09 today I have lost 152 lbs and I weigh 202 ( about 30-50 lbs from goal). Not bad for a 54 year old golden girl revision. I chose the DS because of the diabetes cure rate. also I am a soul food junkie ( porkaholic)and the DS diet suits me perfectly. Especially after I disovered Dreamfiles elbow mac. I make "killah" mac and cheese that i cannot live without. LOL All surgeries require vitamins and supplements , no gettin' around that. The body odor is a myth unless you don't wash LOL. gas is a no brainer. No white flour-no gas.  I have never been this successful in my fight with weight of over 40 years. I weigh less than I weighed in high school. Hope this helps

Well, I will speak up for RNY - I'll be 5 yrs in Aug - and I've taken off 185lbs without regain - lost 200 - but after my second plastic surgery this year, I haven't been able to get back to 185 - I take vitamins everyday and exercise, I don't eat bullchit on any regular basis and I as long as I am doing what I am SUPPOSED to - the tool works for me.

DS wasn't an option I had on the table at the time I had WLS, to be honest, I am not sure I would have gone for it - RNY appeals to my food issues a bit better, I think - and even at 5 years out - I still have volume restriction, I do dump but I haven't had any other major problems.

To me - it's what is really best for you and what you stick to.  Good luck to you!

Only a few days out from my revision to the DS and will say that I choose the DS becuase of the long term stats versus that of the RNY, and I just could not deal with another failed surgery.

Thx ev1 for replying. Glad to learn a lil more about both procedures but I still think the DS just feels right. I can't see dumping just to eat a lil Thanksgiving dinner that always includes carbs or sweets. And the need to test for malnutrition will help me see my doctor on the reg like I should. So now I guess the next step is to find a good doc in my price low budget price range. Idk if it will be Mexico or India but I am sure I will find one. Stay blessed!!!
