I know about the dumping, the lifelong ****tail of vitamins that have to be taken and the fact that you can never eat sweets again.  Can someone give me their thoughts on this?  Thanks.

I won't give you a pro/ con list.  They are everywhere.  I'll tell you my approach instead.  Know what you want
besides wl from your wls.  You will loose on any procedure.  What you want long term and your life style preference will define pro vs con.  Pick your procedure then find your experienced surgeon in that procedure.

Examine every possible procedure against your preferences.  Include dysfunctional eating behaviors, bathroom habits, frequency of dr visits, amount of supplements, aversion to gas or nausea, etc etc etc.  Rate them all.   Rate each procedure with respect to what yu like and dislike.

I found that I did not want multiple bm's in a day because I avoid public toilets.  Malabsorbtion is a con for me because I fear mal nutrition.  I need to learn to eat small portions because I am a bing eater at heart.  I've mastered the low cal binge years ago, a salad binge is still a binge.  I wanted a reversable option.  I was concerned about hormonal issues that interfere with wl or cause weight gain.  Duping is negative reinforcement to avoid overeating certain foods so its a good thing for me.

No procedure gave me everything I wanted.  I did not want rny or ds because of mal absorption.  I sought out a vsg surgeon.  He went over my needs and preferences.  As it turned out RNY was my best option.  It worked for my emotional eating issues as well as my physical needs.  My biggest objection was reasonable in light of the benefits.

I suggest you focus big picture.  Cons alone can be misleading.  And please, check out all procedures.  Disregard the my surgery is best cheerleaders.  This is all about you.  Read the negative sources as well as the positive.

I rejected rny and ds.  I wanted an adjustable band.  I was approved for a VBG by my first surgeon then cancelled two weeks before my surgery.  I decided on an M&M  then realized this procedure had been improved to the VSG.  In the end, RNY was right for me.  It was the first procedure I rejected nine years ago.

I could have had my surgery less than 8 weeks after my initial visit.  (Hell, I could have had it back before it was even routinely done lap.)  So glad I waited an additional seven months.  It was well worth it.  zero doubts.

OA, thanks for your input.  Actually, I'm starting over.  I wanted a VSG and was told that I did not get approval because I don't have a bmi of 50 or more.  So, as far as insurance goes It's either a RNY or Lapband.  The Lapband is OUT period!  So. I'm back to the the original, which is RNY.

My surgeon did not think a vsg was right for me either because of my hormonal weight gain.  With your bmi you may want to check out the ds.  Most ds'ers I know won't give you the negatives so do your homework independently and be thorough.

It is argueably the most extreme procedure, but like all other wls you can fail or you can succeed.  It has many cons but also many pros.  The insurance co's don;t all like it as rny is still considered teh gold standard right now.

Bmi's over 50 have the best chance of apprval for the ds even if you have to go through appeal.  It is worth researching even if your insurance claims not to cover it.  If  your research indicates its an option you may like, find a good ds surgeon for a consultation.  They will know how to prove medical necessity.

If your current surgeon does not regularly perform this procedure you nmay not get the best advice.  RNY may be best for you, but since this is permanant, you don't want to miss any options.

You can also GAIN weight back after the  honeymoon is over--if you get comfortable and don't follow a healthy diet & exercise.  So you have to really change lifestyles to avoid the gain!

Well said.  It can happen to anyone with any procedure.  You've got to address the behavioral causes of your obesity for long term sucess.  My biggest fear is all of this being just temporary because I dont get my act together.

also.....every1 who has gastric not necessarily can't eat sweets. Yours truly can put away candy cakes and pies with the best of them with no ill effects if I chose to. At first I regretted RNY and wish I had opted for DS, but to me the risks outweiged the benifits...also I feel proud of the lifestyle changes that this gastric bypass has forced me to make.

Another well said.  Only around 30% of rny folks seriously dump regularly.  Self dicipline is crucial.  I can eat an entire full sugar desert.  As long as I don't drink for a couple of hours, I wont dump.  a little protein first and I can handle even more sugar.

I commit to sticking with sf treats when available.  If its made with sugar, I have half or less and no doggie bag allowed.  Behavioral change is key regardless of procdure.

Amen sisters! I had RNY on February 19 and now i am back on solid foods. I can eat any thing I want to eat and I can drink normally. The only thing I have in my favor is that I don't like sweets, I like good old food. I have always been a quantity "BINGE" eater so restriction and malabsorbtion was the right way for me to go. Giving up the few sweets around my cycle has been easy because after surgery everything tastes sweet anyway.....Crystal Lite taste like Kool-aid to me!

I do find that i have to avoid grazing and working on my head hunger. I always get more than enough fluids because instead of eating, I drink. That constant drinking made me aware that I always have to have something up to my fricking mouth (epiphany moment)! Take your time and make the decision that is best for you and your body. Ultimately when you choose one, your body is going to do what it wants and make you do some weird things in the process. Can we all say DYSFUNCTIONAL EATING HABITS!

Take care honey and we got your back.
Just a few more steps to wonderland......and believe me I am taking baby steps (ugh).
