OT: Free Computer Technology Tools
Hey Ya'll,
I know that not all of us are as computer savvy as others. I am always searching for new software and applications to use on my computer. It just dawned on me that a lot of folks purchase computers for the first time...not realizing that it only comes with a TRIAL version of the Microsoft Office Suite. Well....they then find out that the Full version of Office is not CHEAP!! Most will resolve themselves to using the evaluation version for "read only" until they can find the extra cash to go ahead and spring for the full version of office whi*****ludes Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access etc...
Well...here is a possible solution for you. Run...not walk to the link that follows. Its a link to Open Office which is an open source (free) program that is completely compatible with Microsoft Office. So if you create a document or spreadsheet in Microsoft Office...you can still open it up and edit it in Open Office and vice versa.
Here is the comparison:
Microsoft Office Open Office
Need "Word" use "writer"
Need "Power Point" use "Impress"
Need Excel use "Calc"
Need Access use "Base"
Hope this helps someone. Anything I can do to help my people get more in tuned with computers and associated technologies makes me feel good .http://www.openoffice.org/

I got mine! Never thought to post this info.
Office became the standard because Lotus and Word Perfect were so expensive. They priced Word and Excel at $89 vs about $250 - $300 for the competition. Now they're the greedy ones.
Its criminal to charge so much for old technology. I hope Sun does to microsoft just what they did to their predecessors.
But... if you feel must, for less $$$ buy the student/ teacher edition of office suite. Eligibility is a student or a teacher in the home. Who's going to know? Access is not included otherwise its the same as professional to the best of my knowledge.
