Hello everyone!

I am a newbie to BAF. It’s exciting that the community is so supportive. I look forward to reading many more posts and words of encouragement.

I am in the early phase for weight loss surgery. I have gone to the seminar. I think what sold me was the statistic that over 90% of those who lose weight are likely to gain the majority of it back. Being overweight all of my life even in times of good diet and exercise has always given me pause. I have my first appointment with the internist next week. Needless to say I am VERY nervous, but after a lot a prayer and contemplation I know this process is for me. I haven't decided on a procedure yet. I was eying the lap band at first but now I'm leaning torwards RNY for the amount of overall weight loss.

I do have reservations about the side effects and complications. However, as a 310 pound 27 year old with high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, and PCOS I’m willing to take this step. I have insurance coverage for weight loss surgery but the cost still may cause me to stretch out the process in order to save more funds. I talked with my family and they were supportive. Their only comment was to remember to EAT WELL and EXERCISE! Both which I haven’t gained the habit for yet.

I have resolved to not discuss this process with anyone outside of close friends and family to keep the static noise out. You know the comments “why would you want to change the body God gave you?", “why are you trying to be white (yes, I have actually heard this told to someone before!), or “you know everyone who has the surgery eventually gains the weight back."

I’ll keep everyone updated on my journey. Thanks for the support!

Welcome and research, research, research.

Check out
http://www.asmbs.org/  .   It includes numerous long term studies.  Its dry, some based on older techniques, hence long term.  However, the site is a comprehensive and informative starting place.

Find the procedures of interest then check out sugeons that do them all.  You are right to be leary of bad advice.  Even on here OH you will hear a lot of nonsense with no basis in fact, especially on the main board.  Learn everything you can about each procedure so you can ask detailed questions on the various surgical boards here and on other sites.
