Hello everyone-

I just got my gallbladder ultrasound (pre-op testing) and the tech says that I may have gallstones. My question to everyone is....Have you had your gallbladder out before surgery and if so, what can I expect?

Hello, I actually had my gallbladder removed 6 weeks after my surgery. It was done laproscopically and as a same day surgery. It was a breeze compared to the RNY. I was in minimal pain after the surgery and was able to walk around fine. Good luck to you.

Hey Ebonyeyes26,

Yes, I had my gallbladder removed like 8 years ago and it was an out patience procedure no problems what so ever.

They shall walk and not faint.

I had gallstones and my gallbladder was removed long before I knew about WLS. It was a laparoscopic removal just like my WLS and it was a breeze. My daughter had WLS and her gallbladder was removed a couple of months after WLS and she did not have any problems. The pain of the gallstones for me was far greater than the surgery. A couple of days in the hospital and you are on your way.

Hi Ebonyeyes!

My gallbladder was removed in conjunction with my RNY.  My surgery was almost 11 years ago, so back then it was only done as an open incision, rather than laproscopically.

My Surgeon removed gallbladders with WLS as a matter of routine.  He stated that far too many patients were requiring gallbladder removal soon after major weight loss, so rather than subject patients to an additional surgery, he removed them routinely along with WLS.  No problems as a result.

I also paid extra and arranged with him to have him remove my appendix while he was in there.  My Dad had his appendix rupture when he was young, and almost died before getting into emergency surgery.  It left a huge ugly scar & I was worried the same would happen to me.  Two non-
essential parts for me not to worry about.

Best wishes to you on your journey!

Hello EE

Ask your surgeon if you can have your gallbladder removed during your weight loss story.

I had mine's after RNY and it wasn't easy. I was in the hospital for two days.  I was one of the few that had issues. With RNY, I was off work for one week. With gallbladder removal, I was off work for a MONTH

I had my galbladder out 2 years before my surgery. It's a breeze actually. Personally it wasn't that painful. Kind of just felt like someone kicked you in the rib cage. It was all laproscopic. It only took me about 2 days to recover.
