They were saying the teachers were overpaid for the performance level of the school.  You have teachers making 70K plus in a poverty ridden area.  I'm pretty sure that teachers are not making that kind of dough where I live.  I heard somewhere they were fired to break the union contract and then rehire at new lower rates.

Do you think anyone would have the nerve to fire all the teachers at a predominently black school?

I could see that happening.  It all comes down to the money eventually. Ya have to pay to learn but if they don't learn then ya don't earn.

I'm convinced that some black parents just use public school as free daycare so I don't think this would go on in a black school.

I was thinking that just based on some of the trifling parents at my kids school.

If all the teachers were fired they wouldn't blink an eye... they would just look for another job somewhere else.  You could hear them on the way out saying they were ready to leave anyway and this was just a sign it was time for them to go.

I'm not sure that firing all the teachers is the right solution here. I certainly think this school is a special case and the curriculum should have been geared to a student population where English isn't their first language.

I certainly believe that there are some rotten teachers out there. They make the good ones look bad.

I've always said that we need to do better by our teachers, military, cops and fireman, but that's just my opinion.

When they brought the daily lottery to NJ officials said that it was going to benefit public schools because it would donate a percentage of the proceeds to education in the Garden State.  They started those "donations" out at 1% and so far that percentage hasn't increased in over 25 years.

My point is if they can't do right by the same people that they said they were in it to help out, then how the heck are they ever gonna have enough resources to do what needs to be done?

..tip toes in this convo lol.. Right now I am just a sub... and I am toying with the idea of teaching when I finish up my Master's in Dec... and ummm well you know what I get pissed the freak off! I am not in a classroom everyday and I still see all the crap that is thrown at teachers.

Yes there are parents who use the school as daycare. I can tell. When I walk into a classroom and sit with the kids it becomes obvious which parents takes an active role in their child's future and which does not. Then let's not get started with the parents who think their child are perfect angels and can do no wrong, therefore they blame the teacher for everything little Johnny, Lakesha, or whoever does.

Honestly I think it is about numbers. That is the feeling I get at times. No child left behind needs redesigning. They are placing so much pressure for teachers to pass the students in order to have a high passing rate. There are some good teachers and yes they are some bad teachers.... however we cannot FORCE your kid to learn.  If little Johnny does not do his homework repeatedly, and we repeatedly try to inform the parent with no reply... then are we REALLY to blame? In my book no. However in the eyes of Admin and government...yes! If the same little Johnny fails...then we are called bad teachers. http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/shrug.gif

No one is looking out for the teachers... (the good teachers).  I work in Texas... I came across a 3rd grader who cannot speak English... WTH am I suppose to do with that? However because of a broken system, somehow this child has made it all the way to 3rd grade. I am not sure whom to blame in a case like that.. the parents? the teachers? the government for putting pressure on teachers to just pass people? who?

Whew sorry...but sometimes I feel like everyone is blaming the teachers (who are in the trenches daily) and not admitting they need to step up and help. A teacher has a classroom of 18-25 or so students. Come on parents I try very very hard to give every child attention but it is not possible sometimes...So can you please help and go over with your child at home...(THATS WHY ITS CALLED HOMEWORK!) Take an active role in your child's future and stop coming to the school trying to give the teacher a piece of your mind. .  It is everyone fault, therefore it’s going to take everyone to get us out this mess.

Ok getting off my soapbox now.

See that's the craziness in it all right there for me.  Teachers can't make the children learn no more than y'all can MAKE this kid speak English.  However, like you've pointed out, there are cases where everyone involved gets frustrated and just passes the kids like that along regardless of how well they can function in school.

but (<--- BIG butt here) ...

You also don't want a situation where you have a "boy" repeating 7th or 8th grade for three or four years back to back the way some of these news stories are coming out nowadays, cause almost everyone in his school might end up either scared of him or pregnant.  Word.

You are right there because i know i would not want to teach someone who has been held back 3 or 4 times for various reasons. 1. that seems like i am being set-up to fail... at that point it is obvious the boy or girl is not trying to learn a darn thing. 2. for the reason you stated (especially if its a guy)... what i look like trying to teach a practially grown man 7 or 8th grade science.. (which is what i am getting my cert in)... especially if its someone who is big for their age, and has an attitude already about being in school
