Looong Post - Regular Labs - FOR LIFE!!!

***Changed up my vitamin regimen. I no longer take my multi with my calcium. I do not take iron (I'm post menopausal) and my iron is considered high according to the labs. So I switched up so that the iron from my multi (36g - 200% of RDA) is absorbed. Calcium trumps iron when it comes to absorption***

I was struggling with my vit D labs. I was tired, achy and felt like BLAH. I ordered some dry D from Vitalady (www.vitalady.com) and I feel so much better. *IF* your labs come back low in D and your doc prescribes you D, it will probably be the oil based one and since our bypass doesn't fully absorb oil, it would be a waste of money. I take 50,000IUs per day (one extra tiny pill) and I'm hoping that will drive my labs up.

Ask your doctor for all previous lab reports. You also want the ones before surgery. Track them on a spreadsheet. That way you will see any downward trends and know how to react.

Prior to your draw, drink a bottle of water. Your blood will flow easier and you will probably have more 9-15 vials done. Here's the list of codes and descriptions:

1759 – CBC w/diff
10231 – CMP (sodium, potassium, chloride, glucose, BUN, creatinine, calcium, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase)
84134 – Pre-albumin
593 – LDH
7600 – Lipid profile (cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, chol/HDL ratio)
10256 – Hep panel (ALT, AST, & GGT)
718 – Phosphorous – inorganic
83735 – Magnesium
905 – Uric acid
945 – Zinc
7444 – Thyroid panel (T3U, T4, FTI, TSH)
367 – Cortisol
7573 – Iron, TIBC, % sat
457 – Ferritin
921 – Vitamin A
680 – Vitamin D (25-hydroxy)
4052 – Vitamin B-1 (thiamin)
84207 – Vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine)
7065 – Vitamin B-12 & folate
83970 – Serum intact PTH

Hello,

I went the vitalady website to purchase some Vitamin D and there were so many choices. Exactly, which one are you taking?

Much Love,

I'm taking the Tender D3-50. I take the higher dose due to my low D.

You had surgery in 2004. If you have a copy of your labs, email them or call VitaLady. I spoke with Cat/Kat? and she helped me out when it came to choosing my dosage. Nope, the folks there are not doctors, but they really do know their stuff.

Funny you post this concerning Vit D.   I went to the doc yesterday and I have to take the 50,000 IU once a week and a 2,000 IU vitamin D daily to get my vitamin D up and they are hoping that once that gets back to normal in 3 months it will level out my parathyroid which is crazy ass high.

Hey SP!

What type of D are you taking? Is it prescribed?

BTW, how's your calcium levels?

~~~Sending some healing vibes your way~~~
My calcium is ok.
The 50,000 IU Vitamin D is prescribed, you can only get that amount prescribed.  I will pick it up from the pharmacy today, I just went to the doc yesterday.     The 2,000 IU is a gel cap that I got yesterday  from Walgreens.
You can get 50,000IUs from Vitalady.com and others.
The vitamin D that your doc prescribed is oil based. Your body will not fully absorb it. I'm not a doc, but looking at other RNYers and their Vit D battles, I'm taking my chance with the dry D.
I've read mixed reviews about gel caps. Some say we don't absorb as well...I'm still researching this one.
Thanks for the heads up on this,  when I pick them up at the pharmacy today i'm going to ask if they are gel based pills.
But I don't know what based the doctors ones are yet.   I will take them for 90 days and if my vitamin D is up then their job will have been done, if not I will try another brand.
I am going to do some reading about dry vs. gel vitamin D when I have some time to read.
YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES, YES....get your labs done on a regular basis!   I never would have found out that my thyroid is acting up if I wasn't having regular bloodwork done.
I get my labs done every 3 months and like you, I'm having problems with my Vit D.  I take the dry  D as well (5000IU) twice a day.  Ordered from www.bariatricadvantage.com .  I took the prescription kind for a month then he downsized me to these.
