Hi guys,

I am just wondering how I'm gonna go about telling these folks that I am having surgery. The only people that know is my family and a couple of people at church. I had decided I was gonna tell the people at work on the day right before I take the time off for surgery, but then I heard my supervisor talking down on the surgery to another lady so I redecided I'm not telling them at all! But obviously they will know something soon or later. I want to just have it and when they ask just say 'Well, I'm not eating like I used to.'.......... I don't know! How did you break the news to your co-workers and others that you don't really have a relationship with? Thanks as always!!!

there is no news to break if you don't have a relationship with them.

Sorry if I sound snapish, but this issue just boggles my mind.

People will ask they are just nosy and no matter what you say they will have an opinion and opinions are like butt holes everybody has one. As for me I just say changed my eating habits and lots of exercise. I want to be healthier me.

You don't need to tell anyone.  Their knowing serves no purpose.  I've not been secretive but I did not spread the news either.  I told personal friends if it was appropriate to the conversation and I chose to let them know.  At work business is business.  I would not suggest you discuss this or any other medical issue at work.  Your supervisor likely has an @$$hole to go with that opinion.  Everybody does.  Why care.  You're doing this for you not others correct?

I guess my approach and thought process was a little different.  I've been quite open about my journey.  I work in a predominantly female small office on a large campus of higher education.    My supervisor was banded about a year and a half prior to my procedure, and was adamant about her privacy and her procedure, which I totally respect.  Once the weight loss was noticable, of course the questions began and the rumor mill started up also.  This upset her greatly of course.  She eventually began to answer more questions and be more open as time went on.  I chose to share my journey and be open from the beginning to squash that from the start.  Ironically, I was met with great support and a total office effort from everyone to launch their own wl efforts by eating better and getting in more exercise right along with me.  We are still holding each other accountable for our eating regimen and exercise efforts.  So I guess the decision of who you share with or not is ultimately yours.  I just wanted to share that sometimes it's not the end of the world if others know.  In my case it has been a catalyst for nearly 100 lbs total loss in my office from my staff, one lady coming off of high blood pressure meds, and another training for her first marathon!

WOW! Thats awesome! I wish I could tell my coworkers, but with the type of ladies I work with, I will be met with more critisim then support. I know once the weight comes off the rumors will start anyway....OH WELL! I guess I will see when I get there! Thanks for telling me your story. It gives me a lot to think about... :)

I work in a huge company in the underwriting department which is the 2nd biggest next to claims and EVERYBODY knows and they were supportive to my face but who knows how they were behind my backs but it has encouraged many to seek help with their weight which is more important than ANYTHING.

I personally told.  i work in a small office that is 95% *****y woman who I do not get along with.  I felt telling after the effect made it easy on me because I know how I am if someone would have come off wrong I don't know how I would have handled that.  Also it was a crutch for me to tell because as long as these stank ass know I have to stay on top of my game because again if I fall off and I hear someone say something foul out their mouth again I will not have a job at the end of the situation.  Also another reason for me telling was to be able to help anyone else be it in my family, friends or the large plus size person who is interested in WLS.  In the end it has to be how you feel and your decision what will make you comfortable

I chose not to tell my co-workers I know they would have tried to talk me out of having this surgery  plus they are so nosy I don't tell them my business at ALL.

I did tell my closes friends and family that's about it.

Now I go back to work tomorrow after being off for 6 weeks and 31 pounds lighter.  I know all the questions is going to start I'm just going to tell them I have been exercising 6 days a week and watching what I eat.   Parts of that is the truth, but they don't need to know everything.
