Hey Ladies,
Please give me some feedback on how you were feeling 4 days post op. Today, I'm in horrible pain. I've gone through almost my whole bottle of vicodin and ordered my refill to get me through the rest of today. I'm not sure if what i'm feeling and doing is on track. So, just need some feedback. I've been resting, but have been moving around, going up and downstairs 2-3 times a day to get moving. I've been literally drinking all day trying to get my protein in. Yesterday, I was 30 grams short. Saturday made it but felt like I was about to bust. I'm not sure if i'm doing too much, if I should be literally laying in the bed doing nothing and letting my fam wait on me hand and foot. I also am trying to figure out how to get in all my protein, 3 vitamins, 1 iron supp and 2 calcium chews taking them not back to back to allow for absorption. My shakes are 11oz and have 30g protein per shake. I was drinking more than 1 oz per 10min which is what was recommended but think that what left me with the feeling of getting ready to bust. So, I slowed it down yesterday and didn't get everything in. Can't really sleep because I'm always drinking to get that protein...... Am I doing everything right? Am I suppose to be in this pain? At what point should I call dr (hubby can't find discharge papers, bless his heart) just trying to make it thru.... keeping my head up! I love you all for the support you've given and can't wait for your feedback.

Thanks again and thanks for being my angels.

Even though you are suppose to get your protein and water in, don't make yourself sick doing so.   There was no way I could drink or get all my vitamins in within the first 4 days or even month.

Sip but you don't have to put yourself in pain doing so, take it easy and don't force it.

Call your doctor when you feel like it - that's what he's there for.

I don't recall getting that much in when I was so new out - I think you're probably doing too much thinking that you'll miss something.  truth is - you're big enough that if you only drank water and did vitamins for a week or so - you'd survive just fine (and that's not me being mean) - think of the Haiti survivor that was found 2 weeks after - they'd only had a little water at most and still lived.

Protein intake will come in time, do what you can for right now, but don't pu****  Make sure you get your walking in, that's very important for this stage, but on the pain - CALL YOUR DOCTOR.

Liquids are a very common problem.  It can take awhile to get all your fluids in but avoiding dehydration is a must.  Getting your vits down is imperative.   Vitamin deficiency damage can be irriversible.

Sip slowly and constantly.  If you try to 'drink' you'll stay uncomfortable.  Its tedious, but take a couple of sip every five minutes or so.

I don't know if you're on liquids or soft food but three scoops of protein powder will get most people their requirement assuming 25g per scoop.  Mix it in 8oz water as three meals then try and 8-16 oz water or sf drink mix etc between each meal.  If you're on soft food, mix the protein with pudding or puree it with applesauce or try unflavored protein in broth or creamed soup.  Just be sure it falls within your surgeon's protocol.

Call your surgeon's office if you are uncertain about anything day or night.  That's what you pay him for.  If you think your pain is excessive, call.  If you believe you may have an emergency, get to the ER.  If possible, where you had the procedure done.

Disclaimer:  This is what my Dr. told me.
We have vitamin stores in our body as well as protien. So he said that it was very important to stay hydrated more than anything so early out. He wanted me to sip sip sip all the time (64 oz a day & this was hard in it self). I was told to add vitamins at 3 weeks. We also have a guide line of 30g protien by 30 days out, 60g protien by 60 days out, 90g protien by 90 days out. So as long as I was on that schedule I would do just fine.

Also you may be doing to much by doing the stairs 2-3 times per day. Maybe you should try walking for 5-10 mins instead. Also have the family take care of you for a while. Now I will be the 1st to say that I did milk my husband and kids during that time but.... it was my turn!! You've taken care of your family they won't mind doing things for you while you take it easy after MAJOR SURGERY.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you feel better soon.

5' 7 3/4 I claim 5'8 SW/CW/GW 267/144/160 <---Dr's goal. My goal was 165lbs. Trying to build muscle. So, unsure what weight I'll be at  once I meet my fitness goals.

I was surprised to hear you say you were going up and down the stairs for movement.  I am a month and a half out and just now getting comfortable with steps.  I was told to avoid tem during my first few weeks unless needed dont wanna stress the pouch while still healing...do you have a long hallway or large room you can walk around instead...I would check with my doctor to make sure thats okay may be the cause of some of the pain

Congrats on your surgery!

What is your surgeon's guidelines? IMHO, you're waaaayyyy to new to the game to forcibly ingest your vitamins and protein. My surgeon was only concerned about clear fluids for my first week. I started my V&P the following week.

Please call your surgeon about the pain.

UPDATE:
Thank you all for your feedback and support. I took the advice and called the dr yesterday. I was admitted to the hospital for observation and here as we speak. The dr. checked everything out-cat scan, blood work... and said everything looks fine. I am constipated. Soooooo we're working on that. But they said it could take up to 10 days for the first one to happen. He did say to not worry about vitamins and supps right now, just focus on protein. Ive been using ready made shakes that have 30g of protein and just bought some others that have 50g of protein. I may try to switch up and do some protein powder in water or juice and see if that helps. The shakes are great but thats all i'm getting in. So, I should be on my way home tonight.  Thank you again for all your tips and advice!!
