OT: Being Naive
I must say that the events of this past week has shown me how uneducated and naive I truly have been in my life. I'm from a very small town in TN and have lived in a bigger town for 22 yrs. I can honestly say that I've truly thought in black and white and since I live in a military town we have a lot of Asian and Hispanic populations.
I'm ashamed that I never took the time to learn the difference between Haiti, Dominican Republic and all of the island people. I go to church with only about 20 people and 5 of them are Jamaican.
It hurt my heart to know that some of BAF members were of Haitin decent and I had no clue.
I want to learn y'all. I know I can google some things but some things can only be learned by someone that has lived it. If you feel so inclined to share anything about your nationality, I would appreciate it and would love to learn.
It's funny, I stopped teaching in 2000 but I have never stopped the thirst for wanting to learn. Teach me.

Hi Neenaj!
I am not Haitian but my ex husband was Jamaican and I still have very strong ties there due to my ex and in laws. Perhaps some people will chime in to give you more info BUT you said it right...you most definitely can google and surf the net to find so much info on different cultures. I like to look at videos from all over the world to get a glimpse of how others live, think and feel. I also love google earth...because it gives you an opportunity to virtually walk down some of the streets in other parts of the world or communities right here in the good ole US of A.
While it good to interact with the people in person....the 2nd best option is to view videos of actual people "who have lived it".
Here are a few I found for you. Now...we can't necessarily believe every thing we see in these videos but it does give a point of reference from which one can later get clarification when actually talking to a resident of Haiti. Mind the dates. I am sure you can find a slew of others out there as well.
