and what are your feelings about the choices?
I think that they would have been more sensitive to just leave a write in space....don't go assuming shioot!!! I chose African American... I am wondering if it would be more correct to offer black and other decent options other than hispanic...I would then put black of African decent.
It's a word that many African Americans associate with segregation, so imagine how shocked many were to see it on the 2010 U.S. census form, reports CBS Station WCBS-TV.
"The fact that it's 2010 and they're still putting 'negro,' I am a little offended," said Secaucus resident Dawud Ingram.
Question #9 on the this year's census asks about your race. One of the boxes you can choose is "black," "African American," or "negro," all placed next to the same box. Ingram said it's not a word he uses to identify neither himself nor anybody else.
"African Americans haven't been going by the term 'negro' for decades now. It's really confusing," he said.
But census officials disagree, saying they found some older African Americans identify themselves that way and they're trying to be inclusive. In a statement, they said: "Results from the census in 2000 showed that a number of respondents provided a write-in response of 'negro' when answering the question on race."
In fact, Congress approved the form more than a year ago. Newark resident Jabbar Ali can't believe it.
"I thought it was something we left behind a long time ago – the word 'negro,'" said Ali.
Chanou Wilshire said the census form doesn't give her an option since it's got "African American," "black," and "negro" next to the same box.
"It's highly offensive," she told WCBS-TV.
But not everyone is offended.
"How you define yourself I guess is subjective. But for me, that on a form doesn't offend me at all," said Brooklyn resident Tiffany Campbell.
Others don't understand why the question of race has to come up on any form.
"I'm an American. What's wrong with just being an American?" asked Newark resident Derri Gowns.
Census bureau officials said they're preparing for the 2020 form, asking folks now in a questionnaire whether the word 'negro' should be removed.

black," "African American," or "negro ....Hmm..it's is a little suspicious to have people of color to choose from so many choices..lol I can't believe there are actually 3 choices for "colored" people to choose from.
So many blacks have been mixed throughout the years some people do not want to associate themselves ONLY with black -- when I was on Match.com just about every black person women and men on there identified themselves as follows "Black, Native American, Caucasian or Hispanic origin. Most did not identify themselves ONLY as black.
I think your suggestion sounds good black of "African decent"....I think black people are so sensitive about who and what they are until anything remotely suggest the "N" word sparks outrage...we have been called so many thangs throughout the years I personally have become "numb" to all....hell I am just me

You know...when you call someone something so much...they think its their name...yadda yadda yadd **** that BS!

Hey Tsunami!
What you say is true.....but they need to quit trying to act like they are being all sensitive. They don't give **** for real...they want our demographics to be all jacked up....heyl they know that some people will probably not fill out the census if they get pissed off enough. Either way we are going to be screwed on social programs and other resources because our numbers are always miscalculated.

Why does the box for whites not include caucasion or non minority American?
We need to include our protest with the census and everywhere else we can. Too often we just ***** among ourselves. We must tell the powers that be exactly what we object and why. You know how the establishment loves to write off our concerns as over sensitive and irrelevant.
I only respond to Black. If Black is not listed I check other and reply Black of West Indian and Latin American decent. It sure ****** people off, but I ncan clearly articulate why African American and Hispanic are not appropriate for me. Hispanics are not the only people of multiple national and cultural origin. Black Americans come from all over the world.
