RNY+ Body odor.....

Hi friends!

I just have a quick question, I was doing more research on the RNY, and I came across a post that said the person's BO was bad after surgery. And the smell was coming from their skin! Has anyone else had the problem of increased body odor after surgery? If so why? And how long does it last? And does it happen to everybody? THANKS AS ALWAYS!!!

Howdy Boomsheeka,
the post was probably referring to ketosis. Ketosis results from the rapid weight loss and ketones are released in the urine. Everyone is different.

I noticed a stronger smell even after drinking plenty of fluids. I didn't have the issues with it coming through the skin although some may. Others have also mentioned breath. To offset the stronger urine smell I used Norforms feminine suppositories after bathing.

The smell will subside after the weight loss begin to slow down or if you go into a stall. Hope this helps.

ETA: Here is some info about ketosis. In the external links area go down to the third one that has an article regarding indicators such as breath, etc.

I don't know where that came from, but absolutely NOT.... perhaps the person emitting the odor has loose skin issues and he/she is not washing it correctly, but there is no special body odor that comes with RNY, lap band, DS, sleeve, or any of the other bariatric surgeries. The gas and/or bowel movements can be deadly at times, but it can be deadly without surgery.... so, that may have been an isolated incident.... I've been a member of OH for four years and none of the regular posters during that time to this one has ever mentioned a "special bariatric" body odor.
I thought you recently had surgery.... if not, do you have a scheduled or desired date?

Hi! Nope not yet, I am in the process of doing my insurance requirements. I have an appt Jan 7 with my PCP, and Feb 4th is my last appt for my 6 month diet. Then I turn everything in and wait. I really hope my ins comp doesn't take forever to approve me! Thanks for asking!

No BO, even with ketosis.  I do find myself showering more often post op.  No real reason.  I just like the ho****er a few times a day.  This must be my transfer addiction.  I digress.  I've noticed nothing that keeping myself clean cannot handle.

Now the gas is another matter.   I feel like farting as often as I do leaves a lingering stink around me.  Hey, I think I get the reason for my mid day showers.  Again, I digress.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

For real!  I've got enough gas to power a space ship to an alternate universe.  Got folks wishing I'd go fart in some other world.

I had issues with my underarm odor, that I had to change to a stronger deodorant.  But, I think it is because of my age and or beginning of menopause or the extra exercising that I am doing.  I switch to a new deodorant and shower more, no problem.

No body odor, but toot odor that could make California fall in the ocean.  Only happens when I eat sugary items, which I shouldn't have anyway.  A friend made some homemade turtles... homemade caramel, chocolate... only the pecans were store bought.  Now, sugar puts me to sleep (something about a high spike in insulin followed by a quick drop-hypoglycemia), but it also makes me toot.  So when I wake up from my sugar coma, I have to reach for the Febreeze because it's definitely foul in the end zone!

Hence, I'm staying away from the sugary stuff in 2010!
