My left side hurts

I'm going to call my surgeon tomorrow, but I was just wondering if this is normal. It started when I was still in the hospital and the nurses told me it was just gas. IMO it's not painful enough for a trip to the ER and I'm not taking any pain meds for it. It's just an annoying painful pulling sensation on my left side underneath my rib cage. It comes and goes and usually it's worse when I inhale deeply.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Other than that, at a little over 1 week post-op, I feel great.

I still get a sharp pain and/or sensation on either side....my upper back....etc...normally, if the pain is not excruciating....or giving me chills from hurting so bad....I will take Phazyme and try to walk slow...but I walk....if it moves when I move, then I know it is gas....

My advice to you as a newbie, ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! You said the pain is not on a high enough pain scale to go to the ER...you know your body...so trust that, but do not hesistate to go if you get in excruitating pain.

Too, your doctor should have a nurses line you can call and she will contact him and find out what OTC meds you can take for indigestion.

I had sugery in 2003 so my doc gave me prescribed meds for indigestion because it is very common!

My cure was that medicinde...some pain pills...walking, sippingon water, and napping.

Feel better and please when you body talks, LISTEN....

Welcome to the losing side where everyone is a winner....oh, and your profile name is the name I call my cousin....I have called her Coca Cola all my life LOL

I focus not on my disabilty; my focus is on my ABILITIES.

I hadn't thought about indigestion! I'll see what they say tomorrow. But I definitely will not hesitate to go to the ER if it gets bad. Thanks so much for your input!

Coca I totally understand what you are feeling. Eventhough the surgery is lapro, I've been told that they have to staple the stomach. I'm sure the staples will dissolve but I believe the gas in combination with moving around, creates that throbing in the side. Its not a overbearing feeling but it can be (annoying) pain. Even when liquids or creamy soups enter my stomach area, it feels a little weird and my intestines does this grumbling sort of thing and if I happen to over do 30ml in a 30min sitting, I get this tight feeling around the walls of my pouch adding to the cureent throb. It's trial and error and a task to find ways to nourish yourself without harm. Do you have issues with keeping warter down, warter is so lucid and doesn't coat. I feel as if I want to bring it up and knowing I have to get warter concerns me. So I've been chowing down on sugar free poosicles & JLo to keep me hydrated. I want this first phase to be over already but I know I have to be realistic, I did have a major procedure...lol and this is part of the price I'm paying for changing my life (our life) for the better. 3months from now we'll feel so normal, enjoying the changes in our body and discovering the new us. Pls feel free to ask me anytime about what I'm exp, it strengthens our resolve of things when we can flank off one another. Were all in this together, yur not alone.

Thanks Free! I feel the same grumbling in my intestines when things go down. It's really annoying. I haven't had problems with drinking water, although for the first time last night, I took a sip of water and I felt some stomach pain that only lasted a hot minute. I almost felt nauseous...and thats the first time I had a feeling of nausea since surgery. It also irks me that no matter what I do, I'm swallowing air when I drink. I'm not using straws, but it's like the air gets caught in my chest and I have to belch...almost after each swallow. Annoying. I understand what people mean when they say they just want to be able to drink! Of all the things I COULD be craving right now, I just want to be able to gulp LOTS of ice water without pain!!! The sippin' is getting to me. hahaha

But you are absolutely right. Whenever I feel frustrated, I just remember that this is the price I'm paying for changing my life and it gets me right back in the correct frame of mind! Hang in there. WE can do this!

Coca-Cola, I know what you mean about that pain - I'm a week ahead of you and I still get it and a burning sensation when anything goes down and then my pouch starts to hurt when anything hits it.  It's not as bad as it was in the beginning, but it's still there.  Also I have chronic pain issues that I still can't take all of my pain meds for (if I crush the pill and take it ...it'll come back up) so I just do my best to ignore it if at all possible.  My current pain level is now creeping up to an 8 out of a 10 scale - so I get my exercise in first thing in the morning (with a dose of lortab - only lasts for 30 min or so) then spend the rest of the day in one spot trying not to move!!!  My pain mgt doc didn't seem too helpful before I had my surgery with trying to give me a script for pain meds in liquid form.  Hopefully when I go back in January they will if not I'll continue to suffer!!  I still don't have any food cravings...in fact I'm supposed to be on two "mushies" meals a day and I'm good if I can get one down.  ALL I WANT IS A BIG OL GULP OF ANYTHING - WATER, TEA ANYTHING!!!!! This is my hardest thing to cope with these days besides the chronic pain.
Good luck with your doc and keep up posted on what he says!!

Hopefully, you are going to see Dr. Macik soon as part of your pre-op. Definitely ask him about it.

I had MAJOR pain on my left side for four weeks post-op and was on pain meds (Roxicet)the ENTIRE time. Dr. Daly said it was because he had to work a little harder on me to manuver the instruments. At 386lbs on the day of surgery, I had ALOT of body mass to get through. Yikes.

You are doing EXCELLENT to not have to be on pain meds right now. It will take some time before all of your pain completely goes away. I personally think it's nothing to be concerned about but check with Dr. Macik anyway.

Oh, and yes, inhaling deeply makes the pain worsen. You are simply healing from surgery.

The fact that you are feeling great after having surgery less than two weeks ago says alot!

You're so lucky to have only one incision to heal up. Try 5!!!

Keep up the excellent progress and hope you feel better soon!
