Ever Feel Like You're Smarter Than Your Doctor

MSW will not settle
on 12/11/09 2:27 am
I have kicked several idiot docs to the curb.  I have no primary because when I discussed wls with the last one he told me most people gain the weight back within ten years.   Stupid.

An MD only means he had the means and the grades to go through higher education.  If he was an ass before he becomes an ass with credentials.  Fortunately you have a good primary.

I won't deal with a pcp again until I find one who supports wls.  Lucky for me my cardiologist and neurologist were supportive.  Specialist trumps internist in the approval process.

Its sad that despite all of the proof docs are too arrogant to admit that they are powerless when it comes to trating obesity.  Their reccomendations for someone trying to loose 20 lbs just do not work for us.

Before college I LOVED the gym. I was like an addict! Swim practice at 4 am, weight lifting 2 times a day, track after school, ect. It felt great to work out. But when I got college I got lazy. I stopped working out and started eating everything in sight. Well, needless to say I packed on the pounds quickly. It took a while to address the problem cuz I was 'cute" so I didn't think I had a problem. Well when I finally decided enough was enough I returned to the gym to get a good work out in and OMG it was not pretty. Working out big felt no where near as good as it did before. I kept at it and physically got in better shape but never got back to the point I was at. I said all that to say, I understand why one would want to lose weight before working out regularly. Running on a treadmill at 300 lbs is a hell of a lot different than 200lbs. If you feel you are smarter than your doctor you might be when it comes to you. You know your body better than anyone. Just make sure you have a full understanding of your surgery and what is required of you after wards. I think you'll be fine if you are prepared to make the changes. Best of luck to you.

Nope. Dude went to school way longer than me and he knows his bidnezz.

Doctors who are anti-WLS are just that. My PCP wasn't exactly excited when I posed the question to him five years ago. Now, he toots *MY* horn when I see him and has educated himself more about WLS.

The doctor that you saw was correct about the lifestyle changes. His delivery just sucked.

Good luck with your upcoming surgery!

Appreciate all of the responses and the tough love too.  I don't have a problem with exercising, in fact back in the day I played basketball and could even dunk; on a nine foot goal that is.  That is one of my goals in all of this, to be able to play again at the level I once did.  When I was in the Navy, I was in the best shape in my life.  One of the reasons I want and need to do this is I appreciated and missed the regimented life I had while in the military.  The RNY seems to be the best fit for me and the most regimented, so that's where I am.

Yes, but is my surgeon that I don't like and never have. LOL  in fact I don't plan on see him again. He tried to intimidate me at our last visit and all I wanted to do was kick his azz.. He has the worst bedside manor I've every seen.Just know that you have to look out for yourself. Good luck to you...

Hey cowboy,  I'm in the process of WLS too, and I feel you on the exercise thing. When it's something that you haven't done in more than "a while", it's not that easy to get back into that groove, but we have to dust off the cross trainers and take it nice and slow until we start to feeling good about it again. I've worked my way up to trottin' (not jogging!) 2-3 miles 5 days a wk, and going to the rec for the Aquacise 1-hr session 4 days a wk. I have arthritis in my neck, shoulders, lower back, hips, knees, and ankles, so the water is great for me. Find something that you used to like to do and get on it. After all,  this (exercise) is something that we'll have to do in some form or fashion for the rest of our lives, if we want to keep our "slimmer" bodies in check! Good luck...... and Welcome
