WLS and Decalcification of the Teeth

Hey Fam!

I was going to write and ask if decalcification of the teeth and wls are connected in any way. I decided to do a little research on my own and lo and behold, it believe it is!

I had been having trouble with my teeth decalcifying. My smile and teeth are my signature traits. I can't lose that. Last year, my dentist put me on this hardcore treatment to regain the minerals I had been losing in my teeth. He gave me a special toothpast to use everyday. I had to brush and floss between every meal. Gargle with ACT mouthwash, to stregthen my teeth and watch my sugar in my diet. He filled my teeth where they were too badly demineralized to make a come back and I thought I would be in the black again with healthy teeth. But no! This did not happen.

Recently, I have been noticing that my teeth are doing the same thing with losing minerals. My front teeth around the gums looks like I have plaque, even after I brushed and flossed. I don't like that look.

Anyway, after my research, I found out that a diet consisting of a grave overbalance of concentrated protein can cause tooth decay. As the bones become depleted of their mineral supply, osteoporosis, poro-sity of the bones results. The bones become weak and brittle with increased danger of fracture. The dentin of the teeth also becomes demineralized and prone to decay.

I believe this explanation also caused me to break my leg last year, when I slipped and fell on ice.

Has anyone else noticed their teeth getting weaker and bones getting weaker?

So how do we change our diets to accomplish our weight loss goals but still keep our bones and teeth strong?

Thanks for this post.  Perhaps I need to review my mineral supplements to ensure they are suffucient after rny.

I'm just hitting ten months post op but I'm a long term low carber.   I started in the 70's.  Mineral supplements are important even without wls on a high protein low carb diet.

Meat, veg, fruit have been my diet staples.   I've been taking 1800 in calcium for ages.   Too much per most medical professionals, but it keeps my calcium levels in the normal range.  I also take vits that include trace minerals.

My surgeon thinks I take too much calcium but the labs do not show excess.  I've upped it to 2400 post op to compensate for malabsorption despite using calcium citrate.   I'm cocerned about teeth and bones because I consume very little dairy.  I also use meds that reduce density in bones and teeth.  I have some bone loss but I have not been tested post op.

I do believe I can avoid tooth and bone issues if I continue to supplement.  I also use restorative mouth wash and floss regularly.   I never realized how important that was.

I never thought about the calcium deficiency until my teeth started to decalcify and I know I take care of them on the regular. But after I broke my leg, last year, I knew something was going on with my bones.

So, I need to rethink supplementing also. I will definitely try the suggestion Val gave me on the Boniva.

It pays to network and talk to people.

I love this forum!

Hi, you might want to bl vitalady & tell her about your condition, as I've read up on her & she seems to know her stuff & she's also a WLS advocate of sorts.  I have added some vitamins that neither my surgeon or nut recommended because of her, such as dry k, e a & d.  It may not be just a low dosage of calcium that is the problem. As one of the ones above mentioned is also very important to bone health.

My surgeon reccomends the k e a and d from building blocks bariatric vitamins.  He also had rny which is one reason I chose him.  I'm amazed at how surgeons recommendations differ so widely.

It is crazy how it's all accross the board in almost every aspect.  But the lack of knowledge about what supplements we really need & the amounts is really scary.  I had to pull my book out.    I have a partial chart of what some vitamin defecencies can cause. But the only vitamins they suggest should be taken are vit b complex, b12,  calcium citrate w/d, iron & a multi.  I was told not to take my calcium & iron together or within 2 hours of each other, because it cancels the iron out.   However, I didn't know in addition, that this also applies to dairy & found this out from the board/specifically from vitalady's posts.

Also, our  pouches need some of these vitamins in dry form otherwise we can't asborb them.      So, I went & got the aedk vitamins Friday at my health food store & continue to research the vitamin posts to see what else i need to add to my regimen & in what amounts.    I've also seen some posters strongly suggest that you insist that you have a more complete vitamin workup done, as most don't cover the profiles that we need to see.
