For those travelers...

Hey...I haven't read the article...but as an engineering geek...I'm gonna give my input from just that prospective....
This is a flight safety issue. Clearly, just from looking at the picture, this is not a safe situation. It's not safe for the over-sized person nor the folks around him. If there was to be some kind of emergency...there would be added danger to all folks on the plane...because the size of this person wasn't factored into the design. Design of the seats, seat-belts, and emergency egress from the plane.
I personally? Would let this person fly...just from the safety standpoint.
(I'm impressed though with this person's "gumption"...to even get on the plane. I wasn't "quite" this big...and I wouldn't have dared even got on the plane at my biggest...)

Doug, take a real good look at that picture. Look at the passenger sitting beside him. He has an expression on his face as if he is saying..."Are you for real? You can't be serious!!!"
This mans ass and back is sitting in the aisle. He KNOW he is inconveniencing others. That's just plain selfish. I'm not impressed at all.
He is compromising the safety of himself and others on the plane. I agree with Mack. When you are an inconvenience to others, you need to look for other options. Hell the train seats are bigger than the one he's sitting in and if not, he could have got private room on the train.
In any case, although it may seem unfair to overly obese people when it comes to plane seats, being asked to purchase two seats, being asked to take another flight, etc. they do pose a safety risk AND cause discomfort to others which too is unfair.

Hey D2BT - i thought of a great analogy -
Clothes stores. There are many that do not stock clothes that would fit this man - he probably shops at Big and Tall right?
Now, does he have the RIGHT to go in to the regular men's store and stuff his azz in some britches??????
B4 anyone goes there on me - yes it IS the same. What if the Big and Tall store is further away than the regular? Mofo gotta drive further, spend a lil mo for gas. What is the Big and Tall clothes cost more? Mofo gotta cough up mo scrilla. Plain and damn simple.
I remember the ONE time I went somewhere and had an issue kinda like this - it was at a theater to see a Medea play - seats on the floor, so they were the metal foldy kind - well, I had a seat between two people - chick to my left was bigger than my then big azz so we having a thigh meat, elbow, sit and balance on one azz cheek fight while I try to brace myself and NOT have an indecent cuddle session with the THIN chick on my right whose seat I was teetering on invading! I didn't go to another event till I knew my azz fit in the seat. And always sat in the handicap long pew in church instead of the row seats.
I don't just have issues, I have subscriptions! I'm saving on the newsstand price.......

This woman actually recieved compensation from her injuries:
Woman crushed by obese plane passenger

An airline has had to pay a female passenger over $20,000 in compensation, after she was crushed by an obese person sitting next to her during an 11-hour flight.
Virgin Atlantic paid Barbara Hewson from Swansea in Wales the compensation almost two years after the flight, after failing to initially take the complaint seriously.
The obese passenger had to lift the armrest which separates seats in order to be able to fit into her economy seat. However this meant some of her body weight was weighing down on Ms Hewson.
Ms Hewson, who was travelling to Los Angeles, had to be admitted to hospital on her arrival. Her injuries included a blood clot in her chest and torn leg muscles. She still suffers pain and requires a walking stick today.
She had complained to the cabin crew at the time, but was told that the flight was full and no other seats were free. After making repeated complaints over the next 18 months, Ms Hewson was examined by the airline's doctors to prove the extent of her injuries.
Following this, Virgin agreed to a settlement of just over $20,000 (€20,400) and issued an apology

Now, I don't like people in general,so being all up on each other like we are crossing the Middle Passage wouldn't be happening either way. Yuck! I already give the "I hope they ain't coming over here look". I can't wait till I get skinty and do it.
I was a frequest flyer at my heaviest. Even at 285 lbs, I absolutely did mind when someone encroached on my personal space. I am always careful to stay out of the personal space of others.
In that movie Jill Scott could have had the aisle seat and every one would be comfy. If her hubby was not being a jackass. She wasn't that big.
The man in the picture is blocking the ailse. Its a saftey hazard. He's fat not disabled. I do not think I should subsidise his extra space. He needs to ante up and buy a first class ticket or two seats.

V'N MY RNY. WORKING FOR ME BECAUSE I WORK FOR IT.
I had an embarrasing situation pre-op this April when I couldn't get the seatbelt to fasten and was in the emergency exit row. Apparently the airline rules prohibit them from offering an extender if you are in that row for "safety concerns". Sooo If you are pre-op 300+pounds and thick waisted, don't sit in that row, so you can avoid an embarrasing moment. Luckily I was able to suck it in and get the damned thing to snap, but it was still embarrasing.
So many fat people won't fly just because of the embarrasment and extra cost. It is a shame.

However when the situation arises hopefully they will approach the heavy person with discreetness and not be all ignorant and say " you are required to buy an extra seat " all loud where the whole plane can hear. Also if there are empty seat available why not offer those seats to the heavy person ?
