Zoloft & weight gain?

Does anyone have any experience or advice concerning Zoloft and weight gain after having WLS?  Going through a lot of ups, downs, frustration, aggravation, irritation and ... Doc presribed Zoloft but I am wondering will I gain weight.  I hear that is one of the side affects.

Thanks,
Deb

Weight gain from zoloft is controllable.  Its not like steroids and some other drugs that will cause you to increase body fat even if you are dieting.  It does not send your hormones haywire.

You'll have to be extra careful about what you eat.  Maybe cut back and up the exercise a little.  I know many zoloft users but none who gained weight because of it.  I was able to loose pre op while taking it.

Great!  Thanks for the information.  I've been somewhat stressing about it because my doc stated it has been known to cause weigt gain in people who gain weight easily.  I'm like, I just lost 145 lbs, I don't want to gain it back.  I'm stressed enough I don't need to be worried about gaining weight.

My daughter did not have WLS, but was on Zoloft for a year and gained 70lbs.  It has totally thrown her health into spin and now, it has been really hard for her to get the weight off.  Prozac may not cause the same side affects.

Thanks for the post.  That is exactly what I am afraid of.  My doc said we will monitor it for a couple of months to see how my weight fluctuates.  What she doesn't understand is gaining any weight back from meds is not not acceptable!  I'm struggling enough to get rid of the last 13 lbs and I don't need anything to impede that progress.

Thanks,
Deb

That's a nightmare.  I was doing Atkins while on zoloft which probably kept me from gaining.  I did not loose much.

It is truly a nightmare and if she can't get it off soon (with the year), because her health is being compromised, we will look into lapband surgery for her.  She has now been diagnosed with hypothyroidism on top of it.  My poor lil boo.

Ask your doctor if Effexor or Wellbutrin would work for you.  I attended an eating disorders program pre WLS and the doctor there prescribed these for me - noting that they are not known to cause weight gain.  I have heard that Paxil is notorious for causing weight gain.

Best wishes,

Rhonda

I have been on Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Effexor, Paxil and they all caused me to gain weight. Medications were the main cause of the last 60 pounds I gained before surgery. My doctor prescribed Zoloft and I take it for a while and then quit when my weight starts going up. I don't respond to antidepressants generally so the side effects just aren't worht it.
