Hi Ladies
Just wanted to know what birth control methods people are using after WLS. I guess we cant take the pill any more... so My only options now are the shot (scared I'll gain weight with it though, the Nuva ring (dont like the thought of having a plastic ring in my VaJJ for 3 weeks) or the IUD... What is every one using? I really wish I could still use the pill

Post op, I was on Loestrin FE (which is a pill) and I was fine...but as SOON as I stopped taking it, I got pregnant.  Baby is now 3 weeks old lol.

I plan to get the Mirena IUD, the other options didn't appeal to me.

I am 7 years POST-OP RNY. I have been on the "pill' throughout that whole time, less a couple of weeks break due to being hospitalized for a Bowel Obstruction.

My oldest son is "22" my baby is a year old aka my ****er Spaniel "REX".

Just like people who have never had WLS what work for some may not work for others.  In saying that the pill has worked WONDERFUL for me.

I use Seasonale pills.  I only have a cycle 4 times a year - LOVE it!

I had a hysterectomy when I was 26 and my baby was 6 months old.   I'm smiling like that because I had endometriosis and 5 fibroids and he was born in Dec. and I was on my cycle from his birth until April and had my hysterectomy in May.  Of course if you want children, my choice isn't for you.  My bad.

I love the Mirena IUD. 4 years so far and no troubles. I go in to have it checked once a year and that's it. The pill is not advised for people with malabsorbtive procedures. Better safe than sorry

I have been taking birth control pills and i have not had my wls yet and now i have a possible blood clot and my doctor said it was one of two factors for me and one was obesity and the other was taking birth control pills.  Blood clots are dangerous so I would say stop that pill, anything but the pill.

I've been on the Nuva ring since I had surgery and I have no complaints at all!!

NUVA RING IS THE WAY TO GO!!! Lol.  NO PROBLEMS w it at all.  Its not as complicated as most women think - your hesitation is more than likely the uneasiness/thought of insertion.  Trust me, I was like that too.  It pops right in, no discomfort and it takes about 20 seconds to insert.  I love it because I only have to deal with it once a month - take it out after 3 weeks, have your cycle, then put a new one in.  Nuva Ring is highly recommended by most surgeons (along with the IUD,  but i didnt wanna have a device in me for 5 years) because of the more even flow of hormones through the ring.  Also, I've had no breakthrough bleeding or other issues that you have when you start a new birth control.  I was extremely irregular before, now, its on time every month like clockwork.

Hope this helps!

Yes, "we" can still take the Pill. I have been on the pill since I was 19 years old. My *personal* belief is that it's a myth that they don't work on post ops. MOST pills dissolve VERY fast and so the absorption thing is not an issue. Granted, you may have to play around til you find one that fits ya, but you will likely find one to work for your body. Like Rhonda said, things affect people differently.
