To Tell or Not to Tell

Just had surgery about a month ago.  In the beginning I told three people, two sisters and a friend.  Eventually, I told more people.  It does not matter how many you eventually tell, the truth of the matter is that there will some happy for you, worried for you, and others who with the green eye monster.  You don't have to broadcast!!!  I shared as the situation dictated. For instance, they will know when you go out for lunch, etc.   There are still others I decided not to tell - I don't know why, but I knew not to say anything. When they saw the change in my eating habits, I said, I am on a  very restrictive diet.  Hey, I was being trufthful. Please,  trust your instincts.  And, be proud of what you are doing.  I find it more work than any diet I have been on. (lol)  Success with your surgery!

I guess it depends on your office, if you got a LOT of catty women working there, *I* probably would not say NOTHING...but maybe only mention it ONLY to your closet friends...

When I got my band I told ALL in my office because it was very small and the people were friendly, and plus if you are getting a lap band your LIFE will not change much..LOL, it will only restrict the amounts of food you eat and you can eat NORMALLY just less food, as long as you don't keep your band too tight (WE lap banders can CONTROL HOW TIGHT WE LIKE TO BE)  to cause frequent vomiting and chew your food well, no one will really know you have a band unless you tell them..

Good luck!!!

Good morning and thank you everyone for your reply.  I'm going to keep it quiet for now.  I will probably let it out up the road.  I don't even have an approval yet and I'm already feeling a bit anxious about the whole thing.

Hey Lisa,

My situation was a crazy one.  I made the decision on my own and didn't tell anyone.  Only one person here on OH knew, plus a friend of mine knew that I was going to the hospital for a procedure and that if I didn't call her by a certain time, she was to call my parents.  Thats the way I chose to do it.  It was something I needed to do for ME and didn't need people fussing over me or all up in the business.  Afterwards however, I think you can gauge people's sincerity.  I told my mom about 3 months afterwards, and a few other friends (like 3-4)...but not that many people know now even a year later.  I share it with complete strangers, lol which is funny.  You just have to know people's intentions.  For instance, I was getting a lot of private facebook messages from people I had gone to school with.  All of them obese women, who would say 'omg you look so good! Ive been trying to lose weight..what are you doing? whats your secret?'  If I felt the request came from a good place, I would reply back with 'I dont advertise this, but for health reasons I chose to have RnY..etc etc'  Now for some fools, you can tell they are just being ignorant.  They make comments like 'Man, look at you all skinny and stuff.  You gonna be walkin round here lookin like Star Jones in a minute!" To them, I just smile and say 'well, your man is LOVING IT!"  Haha.  I know, Im a little smart ass but I can't help it.  For other people who I dont want to know, I say (which isnt a lie) that I exercise an hour a day, no sweets, drink plenty of water, and limit my fried food intake.  That seems to be sufficient enough for them and they let it go.  So really, its a PERSONAL decision.  At any rate, some people will assume you had WLS just because of the amount of weight loss in a certain period of time, but no one is going to ASK you.  For some of them, they arent concerned about you, they just wanna hint around at it to satisfy their own curiosity.  For those folks I say, keep em guessing.  Dont feel obligated to have to say anything to anyone because of what they may be thinking, saying, etc.  Hell, people are gonna talk regardless...either in front of you or behind your back.  If youre comfortable, share.  If not, keep it moving and do you.  Best of luck!
