Hey Trina!

As a person who was recently laid off, I'm sensitive to your post. My previous employer merged my department with their location in France and *POOF* my job went overseas. My director was demoted to manager and was given two months to train the new director. Then he is out without a gig.

I did see the writing on the wall. When negotiating new contracts, my French counterparts always insisted on including a company that had a presence in Europe. I was in charge of North America operations, so I knew something was going. Why would I need to include foreign companies? But I did what I was told and hesitantly went global.

I had health issues and upcoming surgeries to deal with. Kinda hard to switch jobs and wait to get in time for FMLA.

Now I'm without a job, but at least I was blessed with insurance that they will continue to pay for and a generous severance package.

I didn't give up my job. I gave 100% and then some. But like the other poster said, working in an "At Will" state is what it is.

I am late as hell but I agree with you Trina...we have had a few people get fired and my coworkers immediatley sides with the employee being a good employee I ploay well in the and box and know that these people got comfortable fell off their game and thought they were like Beyonce "irreplaceable"...I am  the best at my job but I'm the best because I stay on my game I try to never give a person cause to let me go been there done that and even when I was fired I did it myself because I slipped up and usually they already want to fire you BEFORE they fire you they just waiting for that one fireable offense to walk you out.

Of course theres a few exception to ever rule but we all have to remember we are not indespensible once we stop bringing value to the situation. If your supervisor is one that's threatened by you and you see that shiot get what you can get and know you not meant to be there long because either you'll be miserable "dumbing yourself down" or get fired as she/he look for a way to secure their own insecurities.

Blacks are the worst at playing the corporate game beleiving thats as you say "house ninja" I don't believe that at all I realize that the actuall\ job is only 50% of what makes me a valuable assess the other 50% is my networknig and polticking within and outside the organization.

Could I get fired tomorrow? Hell yeah but if I do they gonna have to really dig deep to find me off my game.

I hear what you are saying but fault or no fault, folks and their kids gotta eat.  The system is set up so that if you voluntarily quit you are almost always ineligible...if you can't find another job, then its better to let them fire you than to just quit ...

Unemployment Compensation started during the great depression....  and while it ain't that bad, 10% unemployment  of folk looking for work [that doesn't include the folks who give up or just arent looking)  is a lot of people who need to eat that don't have employment.  Since starving people on the street is generally considered a bad thing. Feeding these folks either gets paid through unemployment insurance or through welfare, but we gonna have to pay for it and if you factor in medical insurance I'd bet unemployment is cheaper.   I sometimes represent folks in unemployment referee hearings - [when one party - either employer or former employee - appeals the Unemployment Compensation decision.  The cases I've seen run the gambit from - not being able to pass anybody's  giggle test [ I meant to go take the mandatory drug test but my goldfish/pet rock/ cousin got sick- and no that person doesnt get unemployment] - to sad cases where really, a person was just not suited to the work to everything in between.

As a society we are always going to be striking a balance between a darwinian survival of the fittest versus a welfare state.  America cant seem to decide which way to go on this.

Peace,
Rhonda
