Notebook vs. Laptop
A laptop is a small, portable computer. A notebook is essentially a synonym for laptop, but sometimes people use the term to mean smaller laptops. There are different classes of laptops, ranging from "ultraportables", (which may be less powerful but are very small and light) to "desktop replacements" (which have large screens and high performance but may be heavy and bulky). "Notebook" then, can be used as a term to describe the smaller range of laptops. However, in common use, "laptop" and "notebook" often mean the same exact thing and can be used interchangeably.
However there is a big difference in a laptop and a Netbook and some folks think notebook when they are really talking about a netbook.
Netbooks are indeed smaller than notebooks; we usually say that a netbook can have a screen up to 10 inches from corner to corner. Netbooks are cheap and have relatively slow processors, but this is because they are designed for more basic tasks.
netbooks don't have optical drives. They sometimes have Solid State Drives (SSDs) instead of Hard Disk Drives, which are lower capacity but have no moving parts and should, in theory, increase battery life and speed.
A laptop (also called a notebook) is computer which has been designed to be made portable, featuring a screen hinged to a keyboard. A laptop includes a battery for portable power and a touchpad instead of a mouse for input.
In short, the difference between laptop and netbook is a netbook is smaller, lighter, cheaper (on the whole) and simpler.
I love it because I travel frequently and no longer need a rolling case to pull the laptop with its transformer the size of a brick on the power cord. I just take the big purse or shove it in any carry on. It goes all over town with me now so I can hit the wi fi hot spots. I couldn't do that with my laptop because it was so heavy.
I opted for the 6cell battery which gives me nearly nine hours between charges. I'm loving it. I went with a $600 acer from qvc. It came with the case and an external dvd drive and wireless mouse. The size does not permit an internal cdrom as it is thinner than the cd drive. The down side of mine is speed. This is the first pc I've purchased with no need for major number crunching so I took the basic configuration and I feel the difference. Also the keyboard is 92% normal size and takes a little getting used to. Type on several brands/ models before you commit as they have different feels depending on the design of the keys. I picked the one that felt most normal given the compact spacing and lightweight design then searched for the best price.
If you want to surf, do word processing and the normal home use stuff they are perfect and start around $300 with the regular 3 cell battery and no accesories. I assume that the higher end configurations would be right for power applications, but I cant speak on it. I've had mine almost six weeks and If I had to do it all over I would stick with the note book.
