Dr. Says I Am Not Eating Enough!!!!! What?

I saw my surgeon today. How about he says I am not eating enough?  I was complaining about how I have been between 249 and 241 and all in between for about 2 months now.  We started going over my eating.  I enter everything on thedailyplate.com, so I have a good idea of the nutritional content of what I am eating on a daily basis.  I set my goal to lose 2 pounds a week on the web site and they recommended based on my weight and gender that I eat 900 calories per day to lose 2 pounds per week.  Well, I should have known something was wrong with that because IT WASN'T WORKING!!!!!!

Dr. Kim says I should be eating 1100-1200 calories per day and about 5 ounces by volume each meal - 3 meals and 3 snacks per day.  Also, I am eating too much protein at the start of my meals and not leaving any room for veggies.  So, I start with protein and get full and stop eating before I get any measurable amount of veggie in.  I cut out my oatmeal for breakfast thinking it was just too many carbs.  Mistake.  I need to add that back into the mix a few days per week.  Also, I am not using my Benefiber like I used to.  He says that it really does help you lose weight.

The good news is that my protein, calcium, and other levels are within normal range.  So, at least I wasn't that jacked up.

He also advised that I am at a point where I will go 4 weeks without losing and then lose 5-7 pounds the  next month; as long as I re-vamp my eating plan and start eating more calories per day, I should see a change.  Oh, and stay active with my exercise along with it.  Hot mess.   Here I have been watching the caloric intake for nothing!

You also have to remember that when you workout your body needs more fuel and the best fuel is carbs.   So yes eat your oatmeal.

Howdy,
My surgeon told me the same exact thing a few weeks ago, I thought that I was doing good with 3 meals a day and learned that I should be eating 6 + snacks. I upped the eating even having a few sweets here and there, upped the protein and water and now the weight and inches are flying off. I am loving this vsg...I can be greedy.

I'm not familiar with the daily plate but I would presume that it's not designed for wls patients.  If you are going by the 900 calories that they are suggesting you have to remember the rny patients have malabsorbtion  (sp) and you will not be absorbing the entire 900 calories.

I hope this puts it into perspective for you.

I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. No intestines rerouting.  No malabsorption.  Just purely a restrictive procedure.  But thanks for your input :o).

A month or so post op my surgeon told me to get 1100 calories and I was terrified to eat so much.  I could not handle that much food and I already was not loosing and struggling with weight gain.

I've since learned that when my calories drop too low, the wl stops and I gain a few pounds.  Now I plan my meals based on my resting metabolic rate and avoid a calorie deficit over 1500 on any given day.

Interesting fact, loosing just every other month.  It may help explain my weight loss pattern.
