Well,, thank you very much for that info,, I'm printing that for my sons soon to be ex girlfriend. She claims she can't find a job because of her record.  I have no idea what she was arrested for,, probably for being so damn stupid.  She pays the babysitter $20 a day.   She works five days a week,,, part time,, and brings home about $90.  You do the math.  YOUR CORRECT,,,  she doesn't even make enough money per week to pay the baby sitter.  I ask her all the time,, why are you working??

IMO, you have done nothing wrong and  you are completely justified for saying what you said.

She is a grown woman.  She made her choices and now it's up to her to live with the consequences.  That's what it means to be an adult.  You owe her nothing.  I wouldn't put my neck on the line like that for blood kin if they had her history.

All I can say is I hope you threw in a lot of well placed explecatives.  There is no way in hecky-heck should you sacrifice yourself for someone who doesn't give a rat's behind about their own selves and that is exactly what she is asking you to do.

You might want to point out that most universities (and I am sure that Yale is among them) have a policy against hiring felons......so she needs to pedal her wares elsewhere!

I am pissed on your behalf!

You were absolutely correct in your decision, there is no way that I would refer a person with a criminal record to my place of employment.  Hell, even the worthy ones have a hard time with me....you just never know.

However, there are places that are willing to hire felons.  Employers do have some incentive to hire ex-offenders, btw. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit is available to employers as an incentive to hire felons, up to thousands of dollars a year. The Federal Bonding Program is another employer incentive.

Also, she should try staffing agencies (none that involve financial responsibility, of course).  A lot of times, they are willing to go to bat for you and may even help land a permanent position.

All the best to her.

You were right.  I wouldn't help a convicted felon find a job.  Isn't that what a parole officer is supposed to do?  They usually have a list of companies that will hire people with a record.  They also help them find housing if necessary.  I wouldn't give a reference either because you don't know if she's really changed.  I don't give references to anyone I know is trifling.

Hmm... she worked her way up to a high position at her bank only to setup a scheme to basically rob the bank that helped her.....People like this don't deserve to have good jobs with a future, I would not give her a reference you or husband could put your OWN job on the line if you helped this slick con out....

She now has a criminal record and nowadays MOST GOOD jobs do background checks anyway so I don't think there is nothing you can do to help her ..if she has a rocking body she may be able to get employment at a strip club...just kidding, but you did the right thing,  I would not lose any sleep over her; I would think you and your husband don't have to feel guilty because she has laid her bed now she has to sleep in it, and the only jobs that will can get now with a criminal background are hotels, restaurants, or maybe a department or clothing  store -- if she is lucky.
