Hair loss and weaves.

I haven't had my surgery yet but am wondering how much hair loss everyone had.  Did anyone find it necessary to get a weave or braids until it grew back?

I lost a awful lot of hair, and almost 4 years later I still have bald spots, never wore braids or a weave, I just position my hair to cover the bald spots.

Are you having a VGB or VSG?  I had a VSG and started losing hair around the 4th month.  My doctors said that if you keep your protein levels up you won't lose much hair.  My loss was noticable around the edges and front. I am chemical free so I can't even imagine what it would have looked like if I was still relaxing it.  I probably would have used a wig.  When I started noticing the hair loss I really bumped up my protein and started taking biotin supplements.  It really depends on your natural hair texture and thickness whether the loss will be noticable or not.

You probably don't want to do a weave or braids because it will be a mess if you continue to have hair falling out.   I also think that it will be too much stress on the remaining hair.

I'm 11 months out and my hair is thick again.

I'm natural but dyed.  There is a lot of hair in my drain, but just like the previous poster I upped my protein to 100g and take biotin daily.  If I let either slide, the fall out starts again.

No bald spots though.  I actually have less fall out than what I get when my thyroid in acting up.  My daughter had a vbg and she has had no wls related hair loss at all in 18 months.

I take Biotin, fish oil and protein. I havent see much hair loss. My dr said I should b ok as long as I take my vitamins every day. That scared me the most about surgery, I did not want to go bald! It takes such a long time for my hair to grown, so I want to hold on to every strand lol

I'm only 2 months out and my hair is really thick. I have not experienced a hair loss yet, but I know that is usually happens at about 3 months out. I've decided to get a sew-in so that I would not see the hair fall out. I know that it will probably come out, but I will not have to see it everyday, just a mind thing to me.

Ok, I know that it sounds silly, but I'm loving this long beautiful Indian hair! My advice to you would be a sew-in over braids if you got weave, because the sew-in does not put nearly as much stress on your hair as braids, just make sure that you have not gotten a fresh relaxer before the sew-in, because that will break your hair off.

Thanks all for the great comments.  I'm very worried about the hair loss because my hair is already breaking off as it is.  I had planned on getting braids (ends out) but I guess that would be too much pulling on my hair.  I'm still waiting for my surgery date (hopefully in November) but I just want to plan ahead.

I always wear weaves...but I will say this at about 3 months my hair starting falling out! When my beautician took my weave out all the processed part of my hair came out as well. I did loose my sides..I mean bald...smooth as a babies bottom...I sat in the chair and cried! But thank the Lord for weaves and a great beautician...as others have said I try to get my protein, biotin and vitamins in and also i used dr. miracles serum on my sides while the weave was in and I had my hair done this weekend and my sides have grown back fully and thick. Even the rest of my hair is now natural and thick as well. Some loose hair some dont...just be sure to treat it and you will be ok. Some people say braids work for them...me they have always taken my hair out (by braids i mean plats or micros whatever they are called)...

No prob...

When going through all of this the last thing you want to be stressed about is your hair...find you a nice style and get a weave...something you can manage easily. Your body will be going through changes and your hair may or my not react to it...I go get ny hair done every 8 weeks (I wash in between of course) but it is one less stress my life!
