Hello All,

I have a question for anyone that has already gone through WLS; has anyone had to get filters put in before surgery? My dr. suggested it, but said he'd wait until I had an actual date before he really decided.

Please let me know your experience with it or them.

Thanks!

My husband had one put in before his surgery in 2007.  It is and inferior vena cava filter placed through the groin area.  It is usually for high risk patients that are mainly sedentary.  It prevents blood clots post op it filters them.  It's a good thing if your doctor wants to do this.

If you need to know more I will be happy to answer.

Be blessed,
Marilyn

Hi There!

My Dr. stated that I would be getting the filter in my neck. This would be while I am in surgery. I was told it would be temporary for about 3 months. Then they would take it out.

I am alittle nervous about it. BUT..I would rather be save than with a blood clot. I have never had one, but due to me weighing 353, I am at risk for one.

I have had 2 cesections, and this was not mentioned.

Good Luck!

i had the iVC filter placed through my groin a few hours before surgery.  As mentioned above its to filter blood clots and most dr/surgeons suggest them to ppl who are high risk (had previous clots, sedentary, super obese, etc, family history of clots, etc)  Early on filters that were place were permanent, but now they are usually removed 8-12 weeks after surgery.  i will have mine removed at the end of october and they will remove it through my neck.

Hmmmm, I had  filter put in through my groin about 3 years ago...and it is permanent.  My surgeon wouldn't do my surgery without it.  I'm not sure what happened, but I wasn't supposed to have any pain, but I was in severe pain shortly after it was done and for about a week later.  I went back to the hospital at least 2-3 times.  After a week or so the pain went away and haven't had any pain since.  Wow, going through the neck sounds painful.

You said your doctor suggested it.  Is this the same doctor performing your surgery?
