This one almost slipped past me but fortunately I was alerted to it before the full week was out. For all of my NY, NJ, and CT tri-state area brethren and sistas, Mr. Magic, whose real name was John Rivas, died on October 2 of a heart attack. He was an important figure in the world of hip hop radio.
If you're not from the tri-state area you may have still been aware of Mr. Magic as a result of numerous rap groups and solo artists shouting him out on their singles and freestyles early in their career. He was a integral part of Boogie Down Productions vs. Juice Crew rap battles back in the day.
R.I.P Mr. Magic.
