Why??....

I'm 1 day away from my Lap RNY and just don't understand why out of all the multiple and thousands surgeries that take place- Gastric has to be labeled as the most "deadliest" one??!! I'm suppose to get my hiatal hernia removed as well as the gastric on the 16th and to me, the risk of the hernia being moved alone is just as much as me getting the gastric.

I haven't told but a handful that I was getting the procedure and they all have been very encouraging and supportive (except for some coworkers). So today, my mom found out-by no means of me because i wasnt going to tell her at all. She calls me TONIGHT and didnt have an encouraging word to say! So, I'm very irrated at the moment. I had peace about the procedure all the way up to when she called. I have in no way changed my mind, but I'm really just fed up!!

Vicky I am.. Its just discouraging, but at the same time, I expected that reaction from her. That's why i didnt plan to tell her until AFTER the surgery.. But all is well.. I'm still looking forward to the outcome and new lifestyle..

Less than one half of one percent of wls surgeries result in death or serious complications.  You know the facts so don't let yourself get caught up in other peoples nonsense.

Glad you haven't changed your mind.  Let the non supporters talk among themselves and keep you out of it.  Best wishes for a pleasant experience.  You will be sooooo glad you did this but you already know that don't you.

My mom is a very negative person. Thats just her nature. So of course she hated the fact that i was looking into WLS. You are doing this for you and not for anyone else. Once your quality of life is improved the quality of life of those around you will be better also. One day your mom will come around im sure. Keep your head up!

Flo, please do not go into your surgery feeling ill at ease. I am sorry to hear about the 'bombardment' of sorts; people sometimes out of fear and ignorance say some crazy and awful things. I pray that you will have peace, comfort, and mental strength going into your surgery tomorrow. If at all possible, please try and avoid negativity today. Get in a place of solitude and try and surround yourself with positivity. We are wishing you ALL the very best with your surgery and weight loss journey!

Go into your saurgery with a positive mind and don't let what other people say sway you from your decision. You will be fine so don't worry.

I can relate.  I didn't tell my parents until I came home from the hospital.  I didn't because I knew that they were not fully educated on the procedure and that they would only have negative things to say.  I also understood that this was what was best for me and my body and that in the end I have to support my own choices.  All you can do is try to educate them to the benefits of the surgery.  The effects of you remaining obese is more deadly than the possibility of something going wrong.  Besides, statistically the surgery is safe.  Pray for God's protection over you, as I will, and go on and do your thing.  If you don't have support from family and friends you definitely have support from your OH family.  God Bless!

Hi there,
I think mothers sometimes don;t know how to support in a positive way.  I don't think some even realize what they do and how they make us feel.  I do believe that deep down they want us to be happy and healthy.  My mother was the same way.  I had surgery on 8/25 and have don great and my mother is coming around and being more supportive.  You've made this wonderful choice for you and your health.  As you go into surgery know that you are loved mostly by GOD and then secondly by your earthly family.  You will do wonderful!  Wishing you a success full and uneventful recovery.
Peace
