I had surgery on May 5, 2009 and since have lost 67 lbs. I am down to 193lbs. My doctors goal for me is 165lbs. Looking at myself recently, I do not want to get that small. I want to keep some meat and curves (I look smaller than I weigh, always have) but feel if I go to his goal it will be to small. I was even talking with my mom and we both agreed that about 180 would be a good place to stop. I am currently a size 12/14 in jeans so I would think losing another 13lbs would put me at about a 10/12 depending on the cut and I am completely comfortable with this. Does anyone think that I am jumping the gun and should prob try and go down to the 165lb. I have full intentions on talking to my surgeon about this but my appt to see him isnt for another month so I trust you guys for honest opinions.

Oh and just to add, I am 5'5 and I know this will still qualify me as overweight.

What does your OB/GYN say about your intention to continuing losing weight while your pregnant and the risks involved since you just had surgery 4 months ago?

I'm assuming from your signature line that your pregnant...........

Thanks for you answer!
Your the first one to realize I am pregnant, or at least the first to comment. But my OB/GYN has placed me as a high risk case and I am not trying to lose. Since I found out I am I have been living off of carbs: bread, crackers, chips, popcorn you name it I've tried it (morning/all day sickness has a hold of me). I still managed to lose 6lbs in those 3 weeks. She told me it is fine if I lose up to half way through my second trimester in which point if it isnt slowing or turned around they are going to have to put me on a high calorie supplement. I've even stopped excersing (besides general walking) but I am still losing. I am just curious as to where I would like to see myself overall since I am getting closer to this mystical number.

But side note. Risks from the actual surgery she said are minimal (they have dealt with many RNY patients and many before the year). She said the biggest concern they ever see are lower than wanted vitamin levels...but all pregnant peoples vits tend to drop. So there just going to pull blood work every 2 months to stay on top.

Speaking strictly based on what I want for myself, I did not get into this to stay overweight.  A normal BMI is my personal goal.  It all comes down to what you want for yourself both short and long term.

For me its long term that matters most.  I recently dicussed my bmi with my surgeon and he lowered my goal weight so instead of less than 16 lbs to go I have almost 29 lbs left to loose.  I'm already wearing size10p/8p at 5' 4" tall, but a dress size is not my goal.

I can expect some gain as I age and a few pounds bounce back weight gain is common.  By revising my goal to 24.0 bmi I have a few pounds of play for the future.  It will be tough to loose that extra 13 lbs but it will be worth it in the long run.

Thank you! However, I am not concerned with my overall bmi. My main concern is just getting to a point where I am comfortable with myself and my health is out of the risk of any weight related illness (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc). So be that a bmi of 32, 30, or 27 it doesnt matter for me. I dont want to go crazy or get caught up over a number.

From your response I need to clarify why a 'normal' bmi matters.  I'm not attempting to convince you to go lower.  I want to make clear that this is a long term health issue as oposed to being caught up in a specific number.   It is absolutely not about a number.  Moreover, it is thinner than I really prefer.  However, it is a weight that takes into account the tendency most people have to put on some weight as we age, thereby inviting the same risks wls was intended to alleviate.

A pound a year gain would return me to obesity in 20 years if I did not lower my goal weight.  Vets on OH, vets in the real world, and my own life experience have taught me that yes, fat does creep up on you in small increments.

With a normal bmi, should I gain even small amounts over a long time, I remain within a healthy weight range.  Every one who has re gained weight never  planned on being fat again.  I want the co morbidity risks gone forever, and the lower bmi improves the odds of continued success.

Of course we each do what we are most comfortable with.  I framed my initial response in terms of a life time point of view.  Where I land in these early post op years will determine the stability of my health as it relates to co morbidities over time.

I don't know if it's a good thing to try to convince yourself to stop losing weight before you reach your doctor's goal.  This is about your health.  I think 165 is a very reasonable goal for somebody 5'4"

Regarding appearance, it's hard to predict what you're going to look like 30 pounds from now.  You won't really know until you get there.  If you will continue to follow your program, your body will quit losing weight when it's ready.  Also remember too, that RNY's typically have a little bit of bounce back weight after they reach a minimum weight.  If you sabotage your program, you might be setting yourself to regain more than you bargained for.

I'm 5'2" and maintain my weight at around 150.  I guess I'm kind of the opposite of you when it came to setting weight loss goals as a new post op.  There was a time when I really pushed to get down to 140 because I wanted to be able to say that I'd lost 1/2 of my body weight.  If I starved myself and exercised compulsively every day, I might be able to do it, but I don't want to live like that.  I accepted where I am now.  I wear a size 8 in most pants and a medium top.  I'm an average sized woman.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, and I do agree with the previous poster about consulting with your OB GYN.

Thank you for your response. I have consulted with my OB/GYN and she said its okay to lose into mid second trimester (but I've stopped trying already, I'm just taking it as it goes).

I am 5'5 almost 5'6 and I have a naturally big boned frame (this has been confirmed. I also carry my weight very even so my weight looks less than it really is. I had this surgery not to get to any specific weight but rather to just feel better about myself and reduce my risk of getting any illness I was already setting myself up for. By 180lbs, I am shooting for this after bounce back is considered and after baby is born (so who knows, losing might be hard after but hopefully not).

Word of advice...do not make plans to stop. Let your body do what it's going to do. It will find its set point. Don't hamper your loss on purpose because one day it won't be this easy. You don't know how the loss will settle on you and you just may like where you land.
You are probably still going to lose during your pregnancy also. But you are going to have to add carbs this early out, because ketosis is harmful for a fetus.

Thank you. From the consensus I think that is just what I am going to do...just go with the flow. Right now I have added back in carbs and majorily (morning sickness is killing me) so I've been eating them around the clock. To the point where I dont even want another cracker...I want some crab (but it will make me sick :(.
