So before I started anything I called my insurance company and I was told that I didn't have an exclusion to my plan. But I got a letter today saying that the surgery is not covered under my insurance plan!! I am sooo mad, if I don't have any exclusions for gastric then how is it not covered under my plan? I have BCBS of AL....

PLEASE HELP!!

Go on line to find your specific company plan as indicated by your personnel/Human Resource officer.  Did the letter say a specific type of WLS was excluded from your plan or all of them?

Don't give up because you have gotten conflicting information so one information source is incorrect hopefully the letter is incorrect.  If you work for a large company or government agency it is probably included in your plan.  Think Positive

Also check your state board and ask how others with your insurance handled approval.  If you get stone walled by your HR dept or insurance co, file a complaint with your state ins dept.  This will force the insurer to document the policy provisions which has to be filed and approved at the state level in most states.

Best of luck to you.

This can be tricky. I now have Humana and with Humana WLS is a covered benefit but if your employer has an exclusion then they will not cover the procedure. So because of my employer plan WLS isn't a covered benefit. You may want check with your HR department and find out exactly what is covered.

I got my surgery covered with BCBS of TX when I had my done.

You're one of the only one I see with BCBS of TX and was wondering have you thought about PS. And did you find out if it is covered are not. We will be changing insurance at the end of the year and I wanted to see if I'm going to be self paying I hope not.  If you have the time will you please go to the backline.

I also have BCBS of Al and as they put it "any obesity related treatment is an exclusion to the plan."  Pretty much that means your employer has opted to not cover WLS.

If you're up fro a fight, Diana Cox a DS pt and lawyer has helped some pts get their surgery covered.  Also look into ObesityLaw.com.

Good luck.
