There was a thread days ago about wrongly convicted people in jail - I saw this on yahoo - while NO innocent person should EVER be in jail - if they are found innocent later - we OWE them

Dayum!  I don't believe any amount of money can ever come close to them getting the lost years back.  I don't even know if I can put a dollar amount on what I would think to be a deserving amount for each year spent in prision unnecessarily.

People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. ~Author Unknown

BUT - to fund a reasonably comfortable life - that's square.  Lots of other states don't pay anything AND won't completely clear the person's record.....

I think they deserve it.  Especially, in this state where OUR black men are convicted at alarming rates, without proof of guilt.  They deserve more than that.  I pray my sons stay out of trouble and out of harm's way.  I pray God cover them and that they are never accussed or convicted wrongly.

Damn skippy we owe them.

In the name of justice we've deprived them of lives, livelihoods and relationships that are irreplacable.  There can never be true justice from that but we have a responsibility to try and correct the injustice.

What he received is minimal in the big picture but it is a means of independence.  Many people in this world will always treat him like someone who got away with something.  How the hell do you find a job with 23yrs in jail but I didn't do it as the only item on your resume?

Deep breath Marcia, I've got to calm down.  This is a hot topic for me.  Thankfully he wasn't executed.

I so agree!

My heart just breaks for those who were executed and THEN the real perp was discovered.  Their families should still be compensated.

Just like when the guilty 'pays their debt to society' by serving, society owes the innocent who were wrongly convicted.

The Dallas District Attorney, a brother named Craig Watkins, had lead the charge on exoneration of those wrongly convicted in Texas.    You can only imagine the push-back that has come his way for it, since most of those freed have been black.

I do hope they are getting counseling for not only the transition of re-entering society, but for handling money.  It would be a real shame to see the recipients run thru the cash & be broke again in a short time like so many lottery winners.  (Remember that term n*-rich?).  Sad indeed, but all too common with instant cash.

Bravo Texas! I never thought I'd say those words in my life! This law should be national IMO. Society can't give them back what's been taken away from them.

My uncle spent 36yrs of his life in prison for being falsely accussed. He was compensated 1.7 million dollars. I say is that enough for your whole life taken from you?
