Is anyone well informed on this issue and care to share?   Could there be a connection between wls and elevated liver enzymes?  I am not asking for medical advice; but for the benefit of your knowledge and experience.

Today I was scheduled for a routine non wls related medical procedure.  It was suspended because my liver enzymes were elevated.

Aspartate Aminotransferase  51 UL
Alanine Aminotransferase   65 UL
Normal range for each 0 - 35 UL.  Over several years, my usual result in the 20's for each enzyme.

I will be following up with my surgeon and other doctors. However, I am interested in the experience of my peers.

*def not medical advice, trying to remember what I have read

During the rapid weight loss phase of our journey our liver enzymes will naturally be high. Our livers are working hard to process all the fat out of our bodies. This is one of the main reasons they say not to drink. When you take in a lot of alcohol your already "working OT" liver will have to process this also. Doing this can continuosly could cause big problems.

If you are in the stabilization phase, which I know you're not, high enzymes would need to seriously be looked at. But right now we will have higher ones. Your surgeon should be able to clear all of this up, but if whoever it was who analyzed the test results knew about bariatrics I'm sure they would have not been worried.

I've read that if you are really concerned about it, taking milk thistle could help.

Hi There!

I had this same issue but I believe my levels are now regulated; I'm scheduled for a visit next week to confirm. My doc told me this was normal with WLS and that every two weeks they would check my blood to see if the numbers were dropping etc. They were going down every week which is what my doc said would happen. He told me the numbers were elevated due to the fat that's in your liver so when you start losing the number goes down. I hope this helps....let me know.
When nothing else could help................LOVE lifted me!!!!

Thanks all.  There seems to be a lot of different reasons for this.  Since I've never had fatty liver pre op and my values were always stable for 5+ years of monthly testing, I don't know what to think.

Hopefully its only temporary.  I've got more bloodwork to do this week and follow ups comming.  I'll be asking loads of questions.  Thanks again for giving me someplace to start my research.
